Beware the jealous rig lenders.
« on: April 23, 2005, 09:52:01 AM »
I was playing with our group at two of our members' church for their anniversary. We were the last group to show up, which for us is RARE. But anyway, there's a few bass players in the house already all of which I'm sure have been playing longer than I. But one guy had his rig already setup so the all the bass players could just use his gear since he had prime placement of his gear and there was NO other room for the musicians to set up any more eqiupment that size. So, I guess he catches wind that I'm playing bass for our gospel group of which two of our members went to his same church, so he asks me how long I've been playing and we go through  all of the usual formalities when meeting other players.  So I plugged in and did a sound test, all was working fine, so I thought. While I was getting a feel for his amp and the sound it produced I played some group material which was only in broken riffs, nothing fancy, I even tossed in some of Uriah's video 10 for good measure. So then it's my turn to play and the amp has NO power at all!! I mean I could barely hear myself play, so I looked back at him and told him to turn it UP. The amp is on 8, and the gain is on at least 5-6, and this is an SWR 750 mind you. So I tried to tweak the knobs while half way playing at the same time, and NOONE in the audience could hear me I'm sure of it, cause I could barely hear myself and I'm 3-4 ft away and both my pickups are wide open so I know it's not my bass. So when I was done, one of the other bassists said he saw him messing with knobs before I plugged in to play. And I watched him plug back in to play more songs and his bass was loud and full of volume. I don't know why he would do that I guess he just has that type of personality, where he didn't want to see someone else play nice stuff on his rig or was jeaolous I was playing with a really good gospel group that is leaps and bounds beyond my skill level.
I don't play bass, my bass plays me.

That's actually funny. But you know you don't really know what happened unless you talk to him. Going off what someone else says means nothing, maybe he was actually fixing it and didn't get it to work until after you played....It could happen.

What is kind of funny is that I hope it wasn't that your battery was going out on you if you had electronics in your bass.  I remember that happened to me one time while is was gigin' on my own gear after someone else was playing on it.

Replaced that battery and bingo bango I am back in business turning out sweet bass notes for our church.

You never know what happens, but I always try to take the low road first hoping that it was my fault.  If it was the other person playing 'tricks' They already have thier reward.

God Bless

And just what exactly is he going to say? Yeah, I sabotaged it? Besides I don't really care either way. Things like that mean less and less to me as time goes on, I just thought I would share with the group for things to watch for no matter how unlikely it seems. There was no need to fix anything, the amp was working fine, matter of fact he was borderline playing above the organist and drowning out the whole music section,  which is a no no. The worst thing that can happen to a musician is not to be able to hear what you're playing, cause it can throw you off. But I learned a very valuable lesson from it and have switched my practice habits to compensate for things like that in the future whether on purpose or faulty equipment. I mix in some practice time for those times when there is same octave note clashing (bass and keyboard phase into one sound and you can't really distinquish the two sometimes) and low volume levels. I focus MORE on sight than ear when I do this. That way I don't get lost in the shuffle. Being able to hear is very important especially when someone in the group digs up an old song we haven't practiced in a while, and you're trying to find the pitch cause you forget where the song was.  If your audience can't hear you, you may as well not play at all. And I don't do Ashley Simpson renditions.

Well, you'd never know until you ask, right? Like the other guy said, I'd take the low road.

Ofcourse you do! You took the time to vent it here didn't you? Your whole post didn't sound like you were warning anyone. It sounded like you were pissed and wanted someone else to tell you they had the same experience. Maybe I'm misinterpreting what really happened here.

The thread was started  "beware" which can be non other than a warning, I fail to see how you could see it any differently. Besides This happened almost 2 weeks ago and I haven't thought about it since the day after it happened until yesterday. I could care less wether he did or didn't do it. And to ask him directly would accomplish nothing. Matter of fact after our performance I called the keyboard player on his cell while we were driving back home and told him what happened and we laughed about it. I harbor no hard feelings about the situation at all, but this is definitely a lesson that can be applied to any other musician or vocalist for that matter. Mics get unplugged, turned down, monitors go out, feedback hits the PA system, you name it, it has happened. Some by accicdent, and some intentionally,  the most important thing is that it opened my eyes to things I need to focus on during private practice.

LOL

Now you see what I was talking about on that other thread! Just like I may have been reading too much into what you were saying, so did you on the other thread. Chatting through a forum like this will always be subject to misinterpretations because it's lacking the face-to-face, non-verbal and verbal cues we're used to getting when we talk normally....Anyway.
