If I can just vent for a sec...

1. I'm sick of playin the same pass through the same song the same way every time...is there anybody who feels or felt the same way...How'd you break out the box?...I get sick of playin the same church runs for church songs and would like to jazz things up a bit but since I dont really KNOW what Im playin before I play it I keep playin the same thing...it repulses me for real...and I think it has a lil bit to do with exposure so I wanna know how bout a virtual shed

I would like to check out how you guys play some different church songs and see if I can hear something new...see some new licks or runs...some slick stuff...and if Uriah feels like firin up the camera man Id love it...yeah Im tryin to steal...but since Im tellin you before hand hopefully you wont be offended

songs I'd really like to hear you guys thoughts / bass lines on...

1. If you're happy...and you know it...say amen

2. I wanna say thank you...

3. Just want to praise you

4. O give thanks

5. Like the dew

6. High in all the earth

7. O Magnify the Lord

8. We bring a sacrifice of praise

If you have anything hot you do through the chord changes or any hot licks you like to throw in or any tunes you like to mix in there...

What you need my friend and you may not want to hear it is this............. theory lessons. Theory will help you CREATE your own basslines with different arrangements. Most bass players that play hymns work along the chord tones, but sometimes it's better to use scale tones to add a different feel to the music. As far as the songs you've mentioned I can't help you on those because I haven't built any basslines for those songs. But the thing that forces you into the corner the MOST is going to be your piano player. If they only play one style, or only know 4-5 different variations to there chord progressions then you're stuck following them. I know because I play behind a few players that only know a few variations. Just last saturday we played at an outdoor festival, and a member of my church came up to me and said, "I didn't know you could play like that", and I told him it's because of the styles of music and each piano player are different. Because the lady that plays at my church is used to the old southern gospel and the 60's-70's era R&B and Soul tunes. Couldn't play the contemporary stuff if she wanted to. You need someone that isn't affraid to bring new life to old songs, which is difficult to do because most of them are so simple in construction (3-4 chord progression songs).

Now there's also a catch to playing a contemporary bassline to an old hymn. And that is, older ppl may think you're showing off or disrespecting the context of the music. That's why I got with a local singing group to play with because we do alot of contemp gospel with jazz flavor.

Now if it's runs and licks you want Uriah has a plenty he can show you. Also keep in mind no riff or lick is etched in stone. You can deviate as you see fit,  they can also be used to give you some good ideas of your own.
I don't play bass, my bass plays me.

thats some good stuff sir...and you're right I been trying to see how long I could get by without solidly knowing my theory...as a matter of fact it was just the other day when someone started leading a song in a really crazy key (which they do quite often in old school pentecostal churches) and the organist asked me when he got on what key was I in that I couldnt tell him right off the bat and then I started asking myself do I know what Im playing...and I had to honestly say no...I didnt know the notes I was playin before I played them...I aint know the chord progressions...I aint know nothin...and I said to myself "Self, you dont know what you playin" and myself said back to me "You sure dont"...but I kept playin neway...

and you're right the pianist that I started playing with when I first started used to give me THE MEANEST looks EVER!!  If I played a wrong note...to the point where I would just stop playin and I know yall aint never been there but I would get so discouraged because I had a friend of mine who was playin at another church and we would get together and play and he would be just so free and willy nilly with his bass lines and I would want to get out the box and flow with em but I couldnt and I started to realize I was scared...so scared of playing the wrong note that I always played the stuff the same way cause I didnt know whether my "out the box note" would be a "wrong note"...so neway now I've just started playin with another Keyboardist who's a lil less of a...."Note Nazi" for lack of a better term and I love the songs he selects but I still find myself resorting back to my scared tendencies...and scared aint fun...it might be right...but it aint fun...

What's good about yall cats is you might toss out a lick or a run and even if I cant get it I can see it flowing in a song or I can hear it somewhere...it helps to open me up yaknow..its good for me

please take a minute to look at some of my posts that show you bass lines with music behind the bass line...they are either called bass w/backup or bass lines to popular progressions

see if you play any of those lines....
i tried to give a basic on then a more progressive on on the ones titled runs to a popular chord progression.

even thouh you are ready to move on...be sure not to move so far away from the style of the song that it messes with the congregations ability to enjoy the music that they expected to hear.....

we have a drummer at church that gets bored quickly and drives folks crazy!

try to change without destroying the charachter of the music....there can be a fine balance!
