Gigs outside of church service

Wassup fam! I was just wondering how many of you guys have/had gigs outside of playing for church services. I'm very interested in gaining some experience outside of the 4 walls of the church; doesn't necessarily have to be secular music. As a matter of fact, I would love to play gospel (stageplays, community choirs etc.). Just wanted to hear you all's testimonies on how you got started because I have no clue where to begin.
My goal as a musician is to be better than myself.

Sugarbear wuz up?  If you haven't already, start making yourself known of the other groups in your city. Then hang around a little bit to see if there actually living what they are singing about, and if thats something you want to be apart of. Next get business cards.... in the drummer business its the same as anything else advertisement, and network. Advertisement allows people to know your out there, network is word of mouth and whom you know. ( for ex. someone may hear so and so is looking for a drummer, network says, let me call my boy ans see whats up with him, or I personally can't do the gig, but let me hit my boy.)( def. get with someone who is not all for self, not afraid to share)  Get yourself more familiar with the musicians in your community or those that interest you and let them know you can do.( back to my previous statement) and just roll from there. I do gospel, r&b, and jazz gigs. This is a process that will work, and the more you play, the more people will begin to recognize you, and the more you will get picked to play. However have your bus. cards ready or paper and pencil handy. Last but not least stay on your chops, cause we know you already nice. Be blessed and much love kaddw.

Much love for the reply. I was starting to think that this post went unnoticed. I'll get on top of that as soon as possible. Thanks again man and God bless.
