Do you know your scales???  If so, the 9th 11th and 13th are easy to form:

in any key you just take the:

1 3 5 b7 9
C E G Bb D

1 3 5 b7 9 11
C E G Bb D F

1 3 5 b7 9 11 13
C E G Bb D F G

You can use th 9th 11th or 13th to substitue for any regular Dominat 7th chord.

Any chord can be a two handed chord, even a triad

example key of C:
C G / E E

It mainly has to do with the way you voice the chord.

9TH,11TH,AND 13TH CHORDS

If Grandma's memory serves me correct, ther are some chords which are considered two-handed chords. Lets look at the following chord:

Cmaj13 - there are 6 notes which makes up this chord , CEGBDA. Most of us do not have six fingers on one hand nor the reach to play such a chord (any any inverson), therefore one must use two hands.

Now lets lookat another chord;
Cmaj7 - there are 4 notes which makes up this chord, CEGB. One could phsically use one hand to play this chord.

Yes Daryl, any chord can be played with two hands, but their are distinctions between two-handed chords and chords you would play using one hand.

I guess its all in how you think about it.  All chords to me are two handed once I truely understood that, it really helped me with my voice leading and passing chords.   Now I could move to another chord by just moving one note.

Here is an over simplified example (copy right belongs to Hammondman :) )

If you are going from the I to the iv

C / C E G
A / C E G

Before, I would think of any 4 note chord as a one handed chord which would cause me to jump my right hand around alot.  Now I have more options.  Heres another example C7, now some of my options would be

C G / E Bb
C E / Bb G
C Bb / G E
C Bb / E G

ect

Plus, spacing the chords, helps when playing with other people.

9, 11 and 13 chords are all considered dominant chords, although in blues and gospel, the 9 and 13 are often used on tonic chords.

The "11" is often omitted on a 13th chord, because it clashed with the "third".

The "11" chord is usually considered a sus chord - ie- G11 is a Gsus chord, and can be played as an "F" triad over a "G" bass:  F/G. (Used a lot in Motown!)

An easy way to make a "13" chord is to play the basic dominant chord in the left hand, and add a minor triad a minor third lower.  For example: G13 is  G7 in the left hand, and E minor triad in the right hand (E,G,B) the "E" being the thirteenth.

All the best!

Praise the Lord, everybody.  I'm new to this website and I have been playing since I was 19.  Now I want to learn the gospel chords, such as the 9th,11th, and 13 chords.  I am going to practice on these chords and I'll let you kno how I progress.  GOD BLESS YOU.

You can put any one of these types of chords as substitutes for just about anything because they are dominant chords

if you overlap a C triad and a D major triad

it makes a C 13

if you play a Emin7 over a a C triad

that forms a 9th chord

If you play a Gmin7 over a C min it gives you a C min 11

usually 11 chords that are dominant raise the 11 to a sharp 11

in order to get a good voicing you can use shells
in your left hand like

C and Bb
or C and G

As far as turn arounds are concerned

you can take any of these structures and voice lead them into a 1-6-2-5- progression

To be or not to be that is the question you anwer when you pray practice and read your word
