Hey BigKev, I know that practicing scales ain't all that fun, but really, you're feet will really know where to go once you get those down. And you'll know that anytime that you get to the middle C you got to switch to your right foot. Stuff like that you can't think about when you're playing, you just have to do it.
Rosemary Bailey, a renowned jazz organist teaches her students to start out with large intervals, like the 5th, practice going from one note to another and back, so your feet can learn, working down from there.
One of the most important things to remember when practicing these things is that if you're going from one note to another and you miss the one you're trying to get to, don't accept that! Practice going from one directly to another.
Another thing, you don't have to practice these for an hour everyday. I only do a little bit everyday.
For example, the hardest thing about the chromatic scale is that slide from E-F , so I just practiced that a little bit everyday until I got it down. Now I just practice the scale everyday with a metronome, takes about 10 minutes, then I can do something else.
Now when I'm playing and want to do some chromatic movement in the bass, I don't even have to look, I know right where to go....
