My choice: TASCAM FW-1884
« on: August 07, 2005, 05:04:53 AM »
Ok everyone....

I've finally decided which system I'm going to get. After long deliberation, I've decided to buy the Tascam FW-1884. Although it is software-based, for the price I get a lot. From what I've recently read, the VS2480 can also be connected to a computer, but I figure if I'm going to do that, I might as well get the Tascam. I've decided against the AKAI unit, mostly because of the reasons that I want the FW-1884.

Now, I have to decide what type of computer I will use; however, most likely, I'll end up with a Mac, but I don't want to buy one until I can buy one with an Intel chip. Until then, I'll just build a computer to use.

With the 150 rebate, and if I can get one for about 800 on Ebay, I'll only spend 650, which is really good, but I'm prepared to spend 800 total.

This is what I'm thinking about building:

Case: Shuttle
Processor: 2.4-2.8ghz AMD 64
Ram: 2GB
System drive: 120GB IDE
Data drive: 40GB SATA (working)
Firewire and USB 2.0 ports
DVD/CD burner

I don't know what type of motherboard I'm going to buy yet. I have to look at the stats.

I plan to buy another 250GB drive and stick it in my fileserver, for external backup. That'll bring me up to almost 2TB, about 1.7 actually.

The FW-1884 comes with Cubase LE and Tascam's GIGAStudio, so I'll try those out and see how they work. Eventually, I'll end up getting ProTools, since that's what my friends are using.

YEAH BUT I KNOW ALOT OF PEOPLE THAT ARE SWITCHING TO NUENDO 2.1. BUT THE ONLT THING I DON'T LIKE ABOUT PROTOOLS IS THAT YOU MUST HAVE AN (either) EXTERNAL ASIO INTERFACE OR AN INTERNAL SYNC CARD. AND THATS WHAT BREAKS EVERYBODYS POCKETS B/C WHEN YOU BUY SOFTWARE ASIO CARD DON'T COME WITH THEM OR VISA VERSA (i don"t know how to spell that   )

I don't know what you're talking about dude. I know people that use ProTools without the card.
