I have a question about shouting music
« on: December 30, 2003, 10:15:12 PM »
Hello everyone

I have a simple question about shouting music.

I have just recently started playing for a Pentecostal church, and sometimes when the church is ready to shout... I AM LOST!!!!

We have a hammond at the church and one sunday I had some of my friends come to church with me and when my friend played his shouting music I noticed that he pushed the pedal drawbars in, and didn't use the pedals at all but the music still sounded full, despite the fact that we don't have a bass boast on our hammond... so my question is this: Is there like a certain setting or way to put the organ on that will produce a decent sound for shouting music??? That's the best way I could formulate that question... but I pray that someone would be able to help me.

Be blessed

If I run my bass, which I only do if I don't have a full pedalboard, I tend to use an 888 setting (first three leftmost drawbars). I think most people will agree with this. For the right hand, I use full organ (all drawbars pulled out) with leslie on fast. Also, I tap the bass, making it sound stacato instead of legato.

It takes some practice. If you have a good drummer don't try to play the whole thing. Do breaks and let the drummer solo a bit. Even if you're not really good, that'll make the both of you sound a lot better to the crowd. Like they say, just stay in the pocket (do simple stuff). If the drummer isn't that good, however, you should REALLY stay in the pocket then. Doing too much will throw you both off.

When sit at an organ and listen to a song, how do you know when your left hand is doing something totally different than your right hand.  This question may sound dumb, but I'm a beginner.

Your two hands are always doing something different. It's just harder to get the fingers to act independently. Think of typing, it's almost the same concept, except your hand are stationary, so if your computer keyboard had only two rows, it'd be exactly like playing piano, without the music.

A long time ago, when I couldn't afford a keyboard, I drew a piano on a big sheet of paper and practiced with that....Those were the days.

I read an interesting comment about this on another website. The site is a free site, so I don't suppose the musician would mind me sharing what he said; it helped me a lot. The musician compared the two hands of a pianist to a band, a "hand band." The right hand is usually the lead singer and background vocalist(s). The left hand is your bass and rhythm section. I think that's a great way to think of your playing, even though sometimes the roles are switched. Be Blessed . . . BBoy 8)  8)

Well, I play at a church were I don' have an organ, but when I go to my friends chuch, he lets me play his organ and he will play the drums.  But the problem is, I play the bass at my church with my left hand and i don't know how to form chords with my left hand and that has created a problem between me and the organ..Do you have any advice on how I can start to form chords with my left hand instead of just with my right hand!!!!!   THANKS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!!!!

SHOUT MUSIC...ON ORGAN....A COUPLE DIFFERENT CONCEPTS. SOME ORGANISTS DON'T PLAY THE FOOTPEDALS, AND HAVE A STRONG LEFT HAND, AND THAT'S THE KEY, IN ORDER TO BUILD ON THAT...YOU HAVE TO DEVOLOPE A POWERFUL LEFT HAND BASS, AND REPEAT IT, THERE'S A RHYTHM TO IT, DON'T TRY TO GO TOO FAST AT FIRST, ALL BEGINNERS DO THAT AT FIRST. NOW THE RIGHT HAND, AT FIRST ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS PLAY THE MINOR 1 AND MINOR 2, BUT AT AN INVERSION THAT'S COMFORTABLE TO YOU:

LH, (SINGLE BASS NOTES) / RH
C_E / GCEb
F_F# / ACDF
G_A / GCEb
Bb_B / ACDF___BACK TO THE TOP

~~~~~~~~~ TRY THAT AS A START
IF YOU HAVE A BASS PLAYER, YOU CAN DO A LITTLE MORE, THE LEFT HAND CAN PLAY EITHER TRI-TONES OR CHORDS IN THE LEFT HAND AND THE RIGHT CAN EITHER DO CHORDS OR RUNS, OR BOTH:
FP / LH / RH - (SINGLE NOTES)
C / EBb / GBbCEb___FAD____EbGC___FAD___EbGC
G / FB / EADb
Ab / EBb / EbAbC___**TRANSITION CHORDS, GOING TO THE F
F / EbA / ( F_F#_G_Bb_C_Eb_C_G_G_F_Eb_C_F_Eb )
BACK TO THE TOP
THAT WILL FOLLOW THE TRADITIONAL SHOUT RUN, REMEMBER START OUT SLOW THEN BUILD FROM THERE, NEED A MIDI, LET ME KNOW
I have a question about shouting music also....I can do the left hand bass shouting runs real good....the only thing i have a question about is, if you have a bass player playing, what do you do with your left hand because i know it wouldnt sound right if you did bass runs while the bass player was doing it also.
Did you read any of my post above??? :?:
you play chords in the left hand, try out the M7th chords and flat the 5th with it:
For Eb
GbBbDbF___GbBbCF THAT'S THE LEFT HAND
THE RIGHT HAND PLAY: Ebm7___Ab___Ebm7, AND THEN DO Ebm SCALE WHILE PLAYING THE CHORDS IN THE LEFT HAND...
