Home Studio Question
« on: August 22, 2005, 11:42:55 PM »
I need the pro's to answer this one for me.

I have been building my home studio for a couple of months now. No sound proofing or anything like that.

I am running a yamaha mixer

And as for mics im using the Shure KSM27
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=rec/s=mics/search/detail/base_pid/270278/

I am running Cool Edit pro 2.0.

Okay, now for my question. In my home studio I want to achieve the big dog sound that come from paying hundreds of dollars at the big time studios.

Lets assume I have a decent computer, what else do I need to get that sound? Do I really have to spend thousands of dollars? I want my home studio to be equipped with what I need just for overdubbing. Drums, Vocals, Guitar, Keys, and bass.

Is my stuff good enough? I love my new Shure mic but I feel discouraged because I can't afford the 2,000 dollar ones I see. And I feel like I'll never have enough because the stuff they have at studios is crazy. Can you guys share some of your set ups and let me no if your set up is producing that sound.

Do I really need all the external devices, compressors, limiters, etc... ?
I appreciate your time.

1. GET A GREAT SOUND CARD  (COMPATABLE W/YOUR COMPUTER)

2. LEARN HOW TO PAN SO THAT EVERYTHING HAS ITS OWN SPACE.

3. USE COOL EDIT PRO EFFECTS SEPERATELY ON EVERY TRACK TO MAKE EACH TRACK DISTINCT!...(DO NOT JUST COMPRESS OR MASTER ALL AT ONCE!)

4. BE SURE TO USE MONITORS THAT REFLECT ACURATELY WHAT IS GOING ON!...IT IS EASY TO BE FOOLED BY YOUR MONITORS....SO TEST YOUR FINAL MIX IN AFEW DIFFERENT THINGS....I USED TO TEST MY FINAL MIX BY BURNING A CD AND PLAYING IT IN MY CAR RIGHT AFTER A RADIO MIX

We spent about $2,100 this year just to start putting together a home studio project. We bought a Digi002 Rack, a Pair of Event Studio Precision 8 monitors, and a Shure KSM32 mic. We haven't even started on the acoustic reinforcement of the booths.
We got Pro Tools LE, Reason 3.0.3, Acid Pro, Sound Forge, Sibelius, Adobe Audition, and Recycle to play around with.

Starting about a year ago me and my guy started putting together a recording studio (my church gave us a room in an unused area of the building). Building it up is is kinda slow 'cause we have to earn money to get stuff! anyway we are running a Tascam 2488 and an Alesis HD24 for the recording... we then send it to computer for mixing (Cakewalk SONAR Home Studio). For mixing we use Bose speakers (I don't remember what model, they were donated). We have 2 MPC's (2000XL, 1000). 2 keyboards (Motif es rack, Casio wk-1800) and a drum set. We have a pretty good sound, but we're still working on it. Soon we are going to get into live recording...
