I agree that while the transpose button can be a crutch, you don't want to get up on Sunday morning and sound like a train-wreck while you're still trying to learn the other keys.  So, would you prefer to use the transpose button NOW and practice on the other keys after church, or sound like a train-wreck to avoid using the transpose button.

If you sound like a train wreck don't use it as an excuse to transpose but use it as motivation to practice harder.

I don't sound like a train wreck, but sometimes I think it sounds like a short bus.  8O  ....at least to me, but I haven't transposed out of a key for about 8 months....All you can do is take it one day at a time.

THE TRANSPOSE BUTTON IS THE TOOL OF THE DEVIL

Yes, if transpose button was the tool of the devil, then any keyboard that has this evil button should not be used in the sanctuary. On the other hand I would not encourage anyone to use this button. It's like when guitarists use a capo. they're getting an easy way out.
Avoiding this button will make you work harder to learn to play in all the keys.

I must agree that transposing is a handicapping tool.  At my church I have no choice but to play the song in its original key.  Playin in the "odd keys" help you to grow better as a musician.

I will add that the best way to increase your knowledge base as far as the key signature is to maybe tackle one key every month for a year. This way if you have a tranpose button on the keyboard, then always transpose to that particular key.

For example I don't like the key of E . The best way for me to improve is to do all my best runs and chord voicing in F or Eb and move up or down a semitone to get these skills at a level of my favorite key. Then when you're at a comfortable level, play all your songs in the Key of E using the transpose button to master that key.

The best way to use the transpose key is use it to play in the keys that you don't like, to improve in those keys,  so I would disagree that this device is of the Devil. It can be the greatest tool for those who want to challenge themselves for full keyboard skills.

Blessings ! :o

That's not a bad idea skymegatoronto. I've never used transpose because I never wanted to be handicapped and when I started playing in church there was only piano and organ available. I've had a bad xperiences with transpose.  My band was playing at this church and we started playing and when the vocals came in it was horrible. We couldn't hit the right notes. We stopped and started again. Same thing. Then the drummer yells out "TRANSPOSE!!!!".  Someone had transposed the board and left it! Another time we played this big festival and I was playing organ. The band started and stuff sounded screwy. Right before the vocals came in I stopped the song. I had every instrument play the tonic and found that the electric piano had been transposed a half step!!!   Aaauugghh!!!

NoelII, you stopped the song in the middle of the festival to check the tuning. Is that right? If so, how did the crowd or others react, etc.?

I think that transposing can hinder you.  I have never used a transpose button because the first thing that my teacher taught me was to play in all the keys on the piano.  Transposing will only allow you to get comfortable at a certain level and you will never challenge yourself to get better.  I mean if a person uses the transpose button to get better, then that is cool for them, but as for me and my fingers we will learn all the keys.

Be Blessed and Be Encouraged.

YES, Playhear, I stopped the song!!   I didn't watch the crowd at that point.  I figured stopping in the intro was better than hoping everyone would transpose on the fly to E.  The crowd was into what we sang when we were in tune and wanted more when we left.  Stopping is better than sucking!

Ok you wouldnt be able to use the Alesis, Yamaha S90, Yamaha motif classic, Yamaha motif Es, Roland Xp series, The roland rd series, or korgs. Because they all have transpose buttons. I dont know if the kurzweil have a transpose button but I bet you would have to go through 1 million different pages just trying to find it.

You transpose at church on Sunday if the song is in the key you dont know how to play. Mon-Sat, you practice.

I cant believe some of you guys completely outlaw transposing. That too me sounds like ur saying, just play the song bad at church. Someone can practice as hard as they can and still transpose on Sunday if they have too.

Its about will power. If you're willin to learn, you'll tranpose when you have to, and learn the key anywayz.

I wouldnt recommend transposing for anybody who's a weak individual that gets attached to it too easily.

Sunday comes around like that, and pianists cant learn(in most situations)every key between Monday and Saturday. If you have to transpose to make a service sound great, do it.

But Monday through Saturday, practice.

If you have the will power, you realize that you only tranpose when you have to and when able, you practice every key until you dont have to transpose anymore.

Transposing is whack.  I use it to practice my bad keys.  Ex: I'll transpose a song in the key of Ab to the key of E.  When i first started to play, I wanted my church to get a keyboard so that i could transpose.  Then, a local musician told my pastor about the whole "transposing phenomenon" so he forced me to play the hammond B3.   No transposing on that thing.  So now, I can hop on the piano or the board and move around with no problem
