Bass Exercises
« on: September 26, 2005, 08:23:43 PM »
I've been working on getting better pinky and ring finger action, and also crossing strings. Here are a few exercises that I'm using. Play them as 16th notes, alternating your plucking fingers on each note (No Raking)....

These are for ring and pinky finger action....

g--------------------------------5-7-6-7-
d----------------------5-7-6-7-----------
a------------5-7-6-7---------------------
e--5-7-6-7-------------------------------

g--------------------------------5-8-7-8-
d----------------------5-8-7-8-----------
a------------5-8-7-8---------------------
e--5-8-7-8-------------------------------

These cross strings.....

Low to High
g--------------------------8----
d-----------------8---5-6---6--
a-------8----5-6---6-----------
e--5-6----6--------------------

High to Low
g--5-6---6----------------------
d-------8---5-6---6-------------
a----------------8----5-6---6---
e--------------------------8-----

Low to High
g--------------------------8----
d-----------------8---5-7---7--
a-------8----5-7---7-----------
e--5-7----7--------------------

High to Low
g--5-7---7----------------------
d-------8---5-7---7-------------
a----------------8----5-7---7---
e--------------------------8-----

This one sounds like it'll make a nice run, but I can't get it up to necessary speed.

Low to High
g------------------8------------
d-------8--------------5-6-8-6-
a-------------5-6---6-----------
e--5-6----6--------------------

High to Low
g--5-6---6----------------------
d------------5-6---6-------------
a-------8-------------5-6-8-6---
e-----------------8---------------

These skip strings. These are also the hardest for me, right now....

g----------------------5-6-7-8-----------
d------------5-6-7-8---------------------
a--------------------------------5-6-7-8-
e--5-6-7-8-------------------------------

g----------------------8-7-6-5-----------
d------------8-7-6-5---------------------
a--------------------------------8-7-6-5-
e--8-7-6-5-------------------------------

I'm not nearly fast at these yet. On average I'm at 60bpm. Anyway, tell me what you guys think....

how are you playing the first two notes for some of the exercises?  with the ring, then pinky or both ring?
