Trying to learn how to play the piano!
« on: October 02, 2005, 10:14:56 PM »
Hi everyone! I am a 15-year-old girl trying to learn how to play the piano. I know how to do my fingering (right and left) and I know all the scales in the key of c. But I'm getting frustrated! I've been playing for 2 months. From experience how long will it take before I am able to play any songs? I'm not only learning to play for myself but to enhance my singing ministry and to play for my church choir. I know how to read music because I'm in choir at my school(that doesn't mean that if you put some sheet music in my face I will be able to play it). All advice will be deeply appreciated.
Much love in Christ,
Choirgirl08

Hold on, slow down now.  I just started back to playing too for a while.  The things that are helping me is sticking to the basics.  Since you are 2 months into this.  Stick to songs with basic chord patterns.  Its better to start off small than to go and tackle a big project.  Since you learned the foundational chords then start learning other keys D,G, Ab, and Bb scales doesn't have much sharps and flats and they are easier to learn. The main scale to learn next is D because you can find easy gospel songs it that key using the 1-3-5 pattern.  Don't give up keep practicing and pray.  You will do fine :D

In all things give thanks. :)

First of all, you should be practicing in all the keys and not just C.  Start to apply what you know in the key of C to the other 11 keys so you won't get stuck in just one key then have to transpose when other people sing in other keys.

Next, you should start with easy songs that have simple chords.  Songs like "Thank You Lord" or "O Come Let Us Adore Him."  You know slow songs that aren't too involved and then build from there.

Last, be patient cuz it ain't all gonna happen over night.  It will take years of practice.

Tip: Just playing one song is not enough if you want to become a better musician.  Progressions is the key to learning songs faster.  Most of your congregational songs use the same chords, same beat, same everything. Instead of just playing the song, it would be better to learn the pattern so you can play every othere song that sounds like it.
Real musicians play in every key!!!
