Finger Speed
« on: October 15, 2005, 01:50:21 AM »
Here is some stuff I got offline long ago hope it helps someone.
SETTING UP THE CHART

Make this chart that you will practice from each day. First,
write the permutations of 1234 down the left side of a piece of paper.

1234
1243
1324
1342
1423
1432

2134
2143
2314
2341
2413
2431

3124
3142
3214
3241
3412
3421

4123
4132
4213
4231
4312
4321

Write SABCD across the top. These are titles of columns, so put plenty
of room between each.
            S               A               B               C           D

1234
1243
1324
1342
1423
1432

2134
2143
2314
2341
2413
2431

3124
3142
3214
3241
3412
3421

4123
4132
4213
4231
4312
4321

The letters represent various left hand fingerings, and the numbers
are the orders that each note is played in each fingering.
Pattern "S" is a single string:

    Finger =====>     1     2     3     4

    E|------|-----|---0-|---0-|---0-|---0-|-----|-----|-----|
    B|------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|
    G|------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|
    D|------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|
    A|------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|
    E|------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|

    Pattern A:
    Finger =====>     1     2     3     4

    E|------|-----|-----|---0-|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|
    B|------|-----|---0-|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|
    G|------|-----|-----|-----|---0-|-----|-----|-----|-----|
    D|------|-----|-----|-----|-----|---0-|-----|-----|-----|
    A|------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|
    E|------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|

    Pattern B:

    Finger =====>     1     2     3     4

    E|------|-----|---0-|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|
    B|------|-----|-----|---0-|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|
    G|------|-----|-----|-----|---0-|-----|-----|-----|-----|
    D|------|-----|-----|-----|-----|---0-|-----|-----|-----|
    A|------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|
    E|------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|

    Pattern C:

    Finger =====>     1     2     3     4

    E|------|-----|-----|-----|-----|---0-|-----|-----|-----|
    B|------|-----|-----|-----|---0-|-----|-----|-----|-----|
    G|------|-----|-----|---0-|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|
    D|------|-----|---0-|-----|-----|-----|-----|

I don't get it...

If you just practice a variety of scales and arpeggios all over the neck, won't you not only build-up your left and right hand/finger coordination and build-up muscle memory (a VERY important factor of playing guitar) but you'll also be practicing something of musical value instead of random finger excersises that may have no musical benefit at all?

I'm just sayin'...  :)
Music theory is not always music reality.

I guess it's forcing your fingers out of the normal routine especially when you try patterns A,B, and C. It's a little harder than doing scales because your fingers jump around the strings. I'm sort of a beginner myself so you may know more experience wise. I know a bass player that did sstuff like this a he saw results in a week as far as finger speed.

I can see the point of the exercise but there's also ways of taking scales and practicing them in a string-jumping fashion.
One of the most popular is the following:
1-6-2-7-3-8(or 1 an octave up)-4-2-5-3-6-4-7-5-8(or 1 again, two octaves up)

In the key of C you'd have:

c-a-d-b-e-c-f-d-g-e-a-f-b-g-c
Music theory is not always music reality.

I mean a small table , or tab where I can learn how to put my hands and so on.
GOd bless

oh brother...you're asking the anti-tab man to write you up some tab...

Seriously, if I can find a few free minutes (maybe if I just stop TYPING) then I'll work up the exercise in a tab form and post it for ya.
