Key of G flat?
« on: October 16, 2005, 05:56:46 PM »
I see a Key signature with 6 flats, I looked it up and read it's called Gflat. I though there was 5 sharps/flats and 2 naturals

A#/Bb, C#/Db, D#/Eb, F#/Gb, G#/Ab.

What's left?

There are 7 possible sharps or flats for a key signature.

sharps
1 = G
2 = D
3 = A
4 = E
5 = B
6 = F#
7 = C# (all the white notes are sharped; C becomes B# and F becomes E#)

flats
1 = F
2 = Bb
3 = Eb
4 = Ab
5 = Db
6 = Gb
7 = Cb (all the white notes are flatted; B becomes Cb and E becomes Fb)

Hey MikeGee,
     I was taught by my music theory teacher to all remember that Flats and Sharps have always got to equal to 7 when reading key signatures.  For example:  In the key of F, you know that there is only 1 flat (B flat), whereas in the key of F#, there has to be 6 sharps. 1+6=7  and that is for every key on the keyboard.  I hope this concept helps.  Be bless!!

To answer you question, Cb/B is left.

Thus, the key of Gb will have the following notes:

Gb Ab Bb Cb Db Eb F

So this means that I will play a Flat B and a Natural B?

If this is not so I was taught that there was no B#/Cb, E#/Fb?

Oh boy this is confusing. Could I just be making this harder then it really is?

Bro, read your original thread. Then, read the replies carefully. These additional notes you posted and their alternatives are incorrect. Again, here are the 7 notes of the Gb major scale:

Gb, Ab, Bb, Cb, Db, Eb, F

In this scale, we are using "Cb" because in the Gb major scale, it makes more sense to call that note "Cb" instead of "B". Read the scale carefully. In other scales, such as the C major scale, that same note will be called "B". It's the same note though.

Also, note that the Gb scale and the F# scale are the same, but the same notes have different names. Here is the F# major scale:

F#, G#, A#, B, C#, D#, E#

Sit down at your keyboard and compare the two scales. They're the same. Don't speed read. Slow down to fully digest the replies because they're all good.

...also remember that a note can only be used once...

so if a note is flatted already, then another note must be modified.

C-D-E-F-G-A-B

all of them are used once.

Gb-Ab-Bb-Cb-Db-Eb-F

It is possible for the Bb to be changed to B natural, for a couple measures, during a song, but it'll stay Bb in the key signature, unless the key signature changes.

Just remember that you'll always have one of each note. There will always be a C-something, a D-something, etc., no matter which key you're in.

Here are all the key signatures:

0 # or b = Key of C major / A minor
1# = Key of G / E minor
2# = Key of D / B minor
3# = Key of A / F# minor
4# = Key of E / C# minor
5# = Key of B / G# minor
6# = Key of F# / D# minor
7# = Key of C# / A# minor

0 # or b = Key of C / A minor
1b = Key of F / D minor
2b = Key of Bb / G minor
3b = Key of Eb / C minor
4b = Key of Ab / F minor
5b = Key of Db / Bb minor
6b = Key of Gb / Eb minor
7b = Key of Cb / Ab minor

Anytime you are figuring out a scale pick a starting note then list all the notes of the alphabet used on the piano starting with that note.  Example let's pick Gb.  First write out the letters from G to G:

G, A, B, C, D, E, F, G

Next, put a flat next to G to indicate the key Gb:

Gb

Next, go through the W W H W W W H formula to find the other notes:

Gb, whole step, Ab, whole step, Bb, half step, Cb, whole step, Db, whole step, Eb, whole step, F, half step, Gb.

Notice that once u get to Bb, the next note can't be B anymore cuz B is already flat.  Since the next note is C something, it must be Cb.  Does this make things clearer for u?
