which city for the working drummer?
« on: October 25, 2005, 02:17:09 AM »
I just thought I'd see if anyone would be interested in posting or reading a thread about different cities and their pros and cons to a working musician.  I'm thinking of moving to a "big" city somewhere and would like some input.

What do you think about the cities of:  L.A, Chicago, Philly, New York, Boston, Miami, Austin, Houston, Minneapolis, Atlanta, Detroit, Kansas City.

To be honest I'm thinking of staying in the Midwest and moving down to Austin or Houston.  Any thoughts there?

It matters what kind of music you want to play! Also who you know is a big part of it also....Its a huge inner circle and yopu need to somehow break into it.
Mapex Drums, Grant Custom Basses, Carparelli Basses, Istanbul Cymbals,!

BigBlackDrummer is right.... to really work you have to get accepted into the inner circle in whatever city. Bring your personality, your humbleness and your pocket. When they pass you a solo make music not the Guiness Book of World Records for faking single stroke rolls with triplets that have nothing to do with the  melody of the song.

A feather in your hat if you know your way around an MPC/loops/click etc.

Biz card and web site with video and audio clips make the statement that you r are striving to be a "working" music pro. THis is a business so market yourself.

And WORD TO THE WISE: Ge t to know other instrumentalist/musicians other than drummers. Drummers don't hire drummers other instrumentalists do.

Also it is hard to find a gig if you are not already playing in the area with someone. So hit the jam nights and get yourself seen ASAP. Take a rinky dinky steady gig to give people the opportunnity to hear/see you in a working band situation. Play everynight like you just made it to heaven... (spirit-filled and confident).

I have been bumping my head for two years... now I finally seem to have figured out the "system". .. Folk don't want until you have got somebody,
