How to practice
« on: October 22, 2005, 10:14:11 PM »
Most of us don't know "HOW" to practice properly and those of that do know how DON'T practice properly. I often struggle with this and I know better.

Here is a great article explaining "How To Practice". Be blessed.

That's what I'm talking about.  Class is in session.  Let's Learn.  As they would say in the country......"I'ma learn ya."

Yo, Akira Jimbo also says that when we practice we need to work on what we are lacking.  For example: if you have a weak left hand, then that's what you need to be working on.  If you have a weak left or right foot, then that's what you need to be working on and so forth.

Good stuff.

Every time that I sit and apply proper practice principles I am amazed at the growth that comes out of that session.

Truly people I am finding out AGAIN that discipline is the key to acheivement. When we are not disiplined we cheat ourselves and open up the door for the enemy to creep in a lil suggestion here and there. Before we know it we are getting worse instead of better. Maintaining even become difficult.

No substitute for a disciplined mind everyday.

When I look back over this year alone I feel shame to my lack of productivity  and growth.

So to put this in drumming perspective. Playing is not practicing. Practicing/studying your craft everyday is practicing. Using proper form and practicing/learning/applying the fundamentals correctly is practicing. Challenging our ears with new and diverse music; our limbs with edurance  and precision drills against a metronome; working on sight reading and applying the rudiments to the kit; working on dynamics and independence... all these things and more are proper practice principles. We should do these consistently everyday. The talent is the gift. Our real blessing comes from our stewardship of it. Let's become better stewards. Surround yourself with disciplined people, disciplined craftsmen.

Funny how discipline and disciple go together yet they rarely seem to walk together in our day-to-day lives. Hmmm. Anyone else care to admit they are slipping? We have help one another out of this thing called mediocrity.
