Christmas set: Need help
« on: October 31, 2005, 10:57:39 PM »
Ok. I'm buya drum set for my 4 (almost 5) year old. I don't want to get a junior set, because I think it'll be better for her to learn to play on a normal size set.

Do you guys thing this is a good set?

...or are these better...

Yo.....you're really thinking about spending $3500 on a set for a 5 year old? Dang I wish we were kin..  Anyway, I think the Ludwig should do for now. I mean I'd hate to see you spend so much....and then the little one loses interest. That's just me though. ZK

Ofcourse, I'm going to play it too...plus my wife plays drums a little, so it'll be put to SOME use, but it'll mainly be for her.

I suggest the Pearl rhythm Traveler: http://www.pearldrum.com/rt.asp

or the new Rhythm Traveler gig kit that has a full 16"x14" kick

THey both cost about $389

If you don't like these go with something like the Pacific in the natural (only one that a 20" kick comes in... or use to be....) with a 20" kick. The kick and fusion toms will allow her to really be able to get to the drums better.

or the ddrum kits ( 4 piece with second floor tom):

That Rhythm Traveler kit looks kind of flimsy. Is it good?

You wouldn't want to take the Rhythm Traveler on tour but it'll do the job for 4-5 year old.  Plus, it's quick to set up and tear down and it stacks inside of itself so it doesn't take up a bunch of space.  And believe it or not that thing actually doesn't sound bad at all.  It's a good buy for the loot.  Invest in the mesh heads and little shortie can play in silence.

My boy just purchased his 4 year old son the mapex kit, I think its mars or venus. But its tight and he only paid like 350 for it. That might be something else to check out.

yeah the venus set is good it is 8, 10, 12, 18bd, and 12 or 13 snare
it will be better for the little one to be able to reach everything without having to  strain or reach TOO much, and the are good sounding and pretty durable from my  understanding.

also tama  has a set with 10, 12, 14, 18bd, and 13 snare. it is good too

ithink it would be good for you to go with the  smaller tom set up, they are more up to date and better for a smaller person

i really don't like power toms

mapex drums offers the v-series kit which is smaller thatn most. it consists of a 18" bass with 8,10, and 12 toms with a 12" snare. it would be perfect kit for your kid and is by no means a flimsy kit. it runs about $350-400.....
