I Come That You Might Have Life
« on: November 04, 2005, 10:53:35 PM »
Greetings, I'm so glad I found this site.

Does anyone know how to play the bassline in the Andrae Crouch song titled I Come That You Might Have Life?

To me, it is one of the greatest bass performances I have ever heard.  I listen to it a couple dozen times a day and still have trouble figuring it out.

The Lord has me in love with this song for a reason, now I want to learn it.

Many thanks!

Thanks for your replies.  Here is a link to a mp3 file:
http://home.comcast.net/~dubmusic/

The parts I like the most are at 1:40 and 2:42 min. in the song.  I have some other tracks that I have created there; however, it probably won't take long for you to realize I'm a newb.

I'm also pretty sure the song is in the key of D#.  I figured out the intro and part of the 1st chorus then.....that's it.

There is a lot of talent in this forum, chords would be a huge help!

Thanks again.

BTW, real men love Jesus.

Yep, I'm old school (even though I was probably only 3 or 4 years old when this was recorded)

I like the following bassist from the 70's:
- James Jamerson
- Aston "Familyman" Barrett
- Robbie Shakespeare

Yes, I've downloaded some .wav samples in the past for creating tracks.  When I first started playing I learned reggae dub, I guess I'm ready for the next level.

I like neo soul, but it seems that most of the songs are played with basses w/ more than 4 strings (I play w/ 4 strings).  So I've been focusing on the old school.  Make sense?

yeah I know about those 5, 6 and we got a brother here who as a 8 string bass ... I've even seen a 12-string bass before.  It was stringed like a 12-string acoustic guitar

I may get jumped here, being new and all but. That bass part of that song is done in old school basic playing.

From what I see here a forgotten ART. Remember. Sometime simple is best.

I see people playing necks of the bass guitar. 1 million strings on bass guitars now. Bass guitars sounding like Lead. Grab and listen to songs like, Rare earth long version of Get Ready. Now that's some good ole playing.
I can figure this song out for you.  Like this song and going to learn to play it.
Anyone ever heard of Jame jamerson?

there is absolutly nothing wrong with keeping it simple, some people are actually looking for that, but it is good to be versitle. Don't get so caught up in keeping it simple that you bring nothing to the song, a lot of musicians want to play with someone that can throw something into a dead spot of a song, be it on bass, guitar or what have you. But if all you have is an old school style, there is only so much you can do, and a limited number of musicians you can play for, peace!

Wow! @ "I Come That You Might Have Life"

I haven't listened to that sound in a while! I've been listening to old stuff, but not anything from that generation.

Cool, I'm glad to see people are interested in this thread.

I see this style as being a foundation of what has evolved into today's (R&B) sound.  I'm constantly being schooled from the sounds of that era (the 70's).  I'll get to the newer stuff sometime, but I really enjoy learning the "groundwork".

Old doesn't necessarily mean simple.  Have you heard Marvin Gaye's 'Save the Children'?  Jamerson throws down on this piece and delivers the groovist "head bobbin'" ending.  Check it out sometime!

BTW, eDub and Dubster are both me. I didn't realize I created 2 IDs, but I'll use Dubster from now on.

Thanks again!
