Advice on new strings
« on: December 07, 2005, 07:24:15 PM »
I know this question has probalbly came up before, but i didn't want to look through every page on here to find it, so I kinda circumventing hte system so to speak.  Can anyone give me some recommendations for some new strings.  I have an Ibanez BTB305 5 string.  I'm more interested in quality rather than price.  Thanks in advance.

I think this is subjective and each person has their own preference in sound and also the way you play. My preference to a particular brand and model might not fit your sound and style. Roundwound, flats, half-flats... nickel vs. stainless. Roundwounds are brighter sounding than flats, half-flats are in between.

As for quality most major name like Daddario, GHS, Elixirs, EB,..etc is going to be good. These brands may come from the same factories too.

I think sound first then quality second is a good priority. By trying different strings this will allow you to select the best fit for your sound and style. Unfortunately there are tons of different kinds available.

I know I like Elixirs for my Acoustic guitars. More expensive but they feel and sound good to me.
Bass I'm still trying to narrow down a selection. I currently have GHS boomers round in them, I like the bright sound but there is much finger noise (still need to improve on my technique).

I hope this helps.

Lately I have been playing Elixirs. They rarely break and the tone sounds good for a loooooong time.

True, true.  I have an Aguilar obp-3 and I have to get the brightest I can find to offset the earthquake bass.  My roundwounds are squeaky but I don't care.

I like Elixirs as far as sound and string life go, but when that coating starts commong off it kinda irritates me, I guess that means it's time to get new ones. I also Like GHS Boomers And DR Fatbeams.

Advice on new strings

I just got some new strings for my bass. I had the strings I had on it for a year or more. The reason they were on there so long was because I was not playing it. It was just sitting in the corner. I probably played it a month total since I had it till just recent when I picked it back up. Im guessing total I have been playing 3 or four months. I was practicing and the bass sounded alright a few months ago. Then I had fret buzz when playing the F and it got worst the more I played it. I may have played it recently in church 3 or 4 times. The last service it sounded terrible to me although people say I sounded good. I started to get the bass adjusted and new strings but I decided just to buy new strings and do the adjustment only if needed. I put the strings on and what a difference.  :D I know some of you may be thinking duh but Im just learning and now I know the strings must be replaced regularly. I boiled the old strings and I said I will keep them in my bag incase a string breaks or something until I get new strings again. I got some earnie ball strings they sound pretty good. Alot brighter than the one I had on. The string gage is 45-100. The fret buzz went away so now I know bad strings can create that. I saved the 10 to 15 it would have cost to get adjusted.
Vision without action is just day dreaming. I miss practicing.

depends on what you like, I like a bright yet warm sound, so I use DR highbeams roundwound, but if you like a more mellow sound you might want the daddario flatwound they they have a pretty good sound, just not my cup of tea, peace!

I use Hartke strings gauged .045 - .130.  They're cheap too; I ordered a 3-pack 5-string set from Sameday Music for about $30.00.  I've heard some speculation that the strings themselves may be made by GHS.
