A scale is just a group of notes that start and end on the same note.  Pentatonic is a specific name for a specific scale.  The formula for it is: 1, b3, 4, 5, b7, 1  The numbers refer to the scale degrees of the major scale.  So, in C the notes are: C, Eb, F, G, Bb, C

A pentatonic scale is a five note scale. T-block gave you the one in minor. The one in major is C,D,E,G,A. The scale degree numbers are 1,2,3,5,6 in a major scale

Don't forget the "Blues Note".....in the number system it would be the b5.

A pentatonic scale is any five note scale including but not limited to the major and minor pentatonic scales already mentioned.  There are some other cool pentatonic scales out there too.  For example: the KUMOI: 1, 2, 3b, 5, 6 and the HIROJOSHI: 1, 2, 3b, 5, 6b.  These may sound weird at first, but can add flavor to your sound, especially over alt. chords.

That's good info, but if you add that note it is no longer a pentatonic scale.  You only need 5.

PENTATONIC SCALE:

TRY THIS:
USE THE MELODY SCALE: PENTATONIC SCALE,
1_2_3_5_6_8 = C_D_E_G_A_C

That's the melody scale.  You can figure out any song with that scale,  you may stray from the scale with a sharp or flat, other than that...it's right on.

HERE'S THE MELODIC SCALE IN C
THINK OF THE NOTES AS: TENOR__ALTO__SOPRANO FROM LEFT TO RIGHT:

EGC
FAD
GCE
ACF
BDG
CFA
DGB
EGC

I had this saved in my files.....  I normally save who the post is originally by, however, this time I didn't!  (Sorry) .. If I had to guess ... i would say either  Algieres  or Hammondman!

Hope this helps!
