« on: May 25, 2007, 03:05:48 PM »
Wats up LGM Fam. Look I need help.  I have an 7/13 Tama snare and i cant seem to get it tunned the way i want it.  I just brought an Aqaurian Studio X head for it.  I would like for it to sound sort of like Clavin's on Fred's DVD. Please Help. I have a big gig tomorrow and i need this sound i love sooo much.

...dude, tune the snare to it's own sound and characteristic.  You cannot have Calvin's snare sound.  That's been EQ'd and compressed and number #2 you don't have his snare or his engineer.  #3, get rid of the Aquarian.  Tama snares don't work well with 'em.  Trust me man.  Tama was my love for a while. ;)

...with that said, put the Studio X to the side and get one of these head combos.

1.  Remo Ambassador over Ambassador Snare Side

2.  Evans G1 over Hazy 300

3.  Remo Controlled Sound Ambassodor with Black or White dot underneath over Ambassador Snare Side.

4.  Evans Reverse Power Dot over Hazy 300.

...TAMA drum company shells tend to like Evans so give 'em a try.  Once again, find the best sound for the snare YOU have and get everyone else's snare sound out of your mind.  You need to make everyone else want YOUR sound. ;)  Get busy.

Haha if you're referring to the snare in the first half of the DVD that's one of my drums...
A solid block cherry wood snare 13x5.5 you're gonna have a hard time getting that sound out of your tama... it's too big.

the second half of the dvd he's using his trusty yamaha which I believe is a 14x6 I'm not sure though...
Still your drum is gonna have it's own voice and you got the wrong head also... Calvin's using ambassadors or emperors
on those snares... You got a super muffled head with the studio x by aquarian...

You know that gets to me sometimes...
Drummers pick up a deep snare which naturally has more overtones than thinner snares and then the couple it with THICK MUFFLED heads to choke them out... I don't get it...

Sorry I'm just ranting a little... Hey CHEER UP IT'S A LONG WEEKEND!!!! WOOO HOOO!!!
GOD BLESS

...I don't understand why you can't get another head for another three days. ?/?  At any rate....do you have any friends that play drums?  If so, see if they can let you borrow or have one of theirs and trade off the Aquarian or take the Aquarian back to the store and tell them that it stunk and get your money back.  (Try anyway)  The point is that you need to hurry up and get your new head as of yesterday.  Oh yeah, try not to choke the life out of your snare anymore. lol

haha....I have the Aquarian Studio X right now on my Maple Premier 13"x7" Modern Classic snare...it's alright...i'm trying different heads...just experimenting...it didn't choke my snare too much...I have a thin maple shell so the sound isn't to focused with that head. I tried a Powerstroke 3 once and that was stupid. That head is wack. It takes the life out of a drum. In my opinion. Every snare is different. What works for one snare may not work for the other. For me the best heads for my snare are the Remo Coated Emperor and the Evans Coated G2 wich is little warmer than the Coated Emperor. I noticed Evans seem to be warmer than Remo heads. God Bless.
