Just Not Sounding Right!

I am playing the right chords to songs, but it really doesnt sound like the song?what should I do. Some songs that I play really doesnt sound like the song, but people tend to catch on to it after awhile. what should I do so people know what im playing right from the start?

If you're chords are different, then you should add the melody.

....then if someone starts to sing, you don't have to play the melody as much.

yeah like if you aint playin wit a singer the first couple times around do that right hand melody left hand chord thing then erone will catch on then you start strechin out
