To B3Wannabe (just some help)
« on: December 06, 2005, 04:07:35 PM »
Hey do you think you can tell me how to play a Cmajor 7, 6, and 9 on a 4 string bass. Im trying to learn the Jaco Pastorius song "Portrait of Tracy". I can't figure them out on a 4 string, wihout making the notes so low at the sametime. The way he plays it, it sounds pretty with low notes and high chords.

Thanks and Godbless
Brittany

The key to playing this song is knowing all of your harmonics.  I've just listened to this song and I don't hear one chord that's not played without harmonics on the top.  If you look at the tab of this song it maps out where each harmonic is and what root note to play under it.  A lot of these chords he's playing two harmonics simotaneously then catching the root.
Good Luck :)

Thanks alot for your help. Harmonics are just two notes together right? Where can I find all of the harmonics or learn them?  Im a beginner so I have to make sure Im right. Also when you say that he's throughing in the root note would he be playing that at the top E string or lower G string. Can you give me an example of a chord with harmonics in it on this song. I came up with C major7, 6, and then 9. Would there be any harmonics in those?

For that Cmaj7 chord play the C on the 3rd fret of the A string. While the C is still ringing, play the 5th fret harmonic on the D string and the 4th fret harmonic on the G string simutaneously.  whenever I run into a C chord in that song thats what I'm playing. Its a tough fingering and you have to have an extra light touch over those frets.

Go to activebass.com and punch on lessons.  Then in the search box, type harmonics.  There is several lessons on harmonics there.

By harmonics I believe that he means the "bell like" sounds.  Not 2 notes at a time.  The easiest ones I know of to get to ring are at the 5th, 7th, and 12th frets.  Then there are more over your pickups.  I've haven't attempted to use them in a song yet so I couldn't tell you how to play "Portrait of Tracy".

Actually by playing the harmonic on the 5th fret of the D string, and the harmonic on the 3.75 fret of the G string simutaneously, and the C note on the A string, you get the chord he's talking about.

No, that's harmony.  Harmonics are the ringing high tones.  Like, if you lightly touch a string, any, with the fretting hand (but don't press down to the fret) at the 12th fret and pluck it with the other hand it will ring.

That will work on any string.  The 12th fret is just ONE place where you can get harmonic sounds.  Then the 7th, the 5th, and so on.  But the 12th is the easiest.  The others start getting harder to sound, but they're there.

you can get harmonics at the 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 5   frets  pretty much anywhere you want to try it out at.

touch lightly and pluck down near the bridge to get the best results.  Check out some of victor wooten's stuff.  lots of harmonics, all down low.

Hey! I'm glad you got some help. I know a little about harmonics, but I don't know anything about that song.
