Choir parts

Hi, I'm a musician. I need help on giving choir parts.  Soprano is pretty much melody i think but I have difficulty giving alto and tenor parts.
Unison is easy.

If I were you, I would get section leads for all parts, soprano, alto, and tenor and bass if it's 4 part.  They will be able to help you to find and give out parts.  

Utilize folks who are familiar with the songs to help you give the parts.  There's no easy way around it, you have to know the parts to be able to give them out.  Either you can show them by singing it or playing their note so they can hear it, or use folks who are familar with the music to help others get the right pitch.  Of course separate the parts and work on them one at a time.

How important are parts in choir songs? Wouldn't it be normal just to do all songs in unison because I have had a problem with giving parts as well.

The only thing that's important is that you are lifting the Lord up and praising his Holy name.  Parts are only as important as you want to make them.  Some choirs hear a song and sing what they hear.  Some folk get more into training and singing in parts is part of the choir training.  Neither is right or wrong or more important than the other.  It's all about praising his name first and foremost. On the organizational level, it's about how you run your music ministry.
