Question about reading chord charts you guys post
« on: November 09, 2005, 10:36:59 PM »
Hi i'm new the forum. i've been reading almost all of your posts daily and it is full of great information that encouraged me to develope this gift that god has given me for piano. my question is when you post  charts saying
 LH/Rh
F,A/ F,A,C,E is that playing two notes at the same time with the left because sometimes i get a very weird sounding chord when i'm trying to follow the posts. Could someone please break down in dummy terms the proper way of reading these charts. Thanks!

To answer your question.

When chords are posted:

FA/FACE

You would play the F & A note in the left hand and play the FACE note in the right hand

Usually when the chord was seperated by a comma FA/F,A,C,E, That would mean to play the notes F, A, C, E singlely.

If you don't like the sound, try inverting the chord to get the sound you are trying to achieve. For example, instead of playing FACE, try plaing ACEF or EFAC. You can even trop a note out of the chord and try just playing the root chord F/FAC.

Hey Sister T,
Does that also mean: f,a,c,e, play singlely - same as: f-a-c-e play singlely
some are posted with dashes... :?

I can't believe it I also understood what you said about inverting - I caught it - I'm very

Also, the book says:
1st measure: notes: cfef
and at the top of that measure it have a f
how do i play that?
Do I hold down the letter f through the 4 beats or do I play the f root chord while I play cfef: fac is the f root right?

When u see a chord like this, F-A-C-E, it means to play all 4 notes at the same time.  If the notes are separated by commas, play each note separately.
