How creative are ya?
« on: January 12, 2006, 11:48:50 PM »
Whats up ya! Im just curious to see how much creativity do you all use. Do you keep your mind wide open when at the kit? or do you just relie on what you know? As for me I like to have fun experimenting with new things such as being able to play a clave pattern with a stick in bewteen my toe instead of the foot pedal and doing double pedal licks with a single pedal without using the heel toe method. It sounds nuts but i like to just have fun and push the mental blocks. Its not to brag or nothing just to show how much and fun it is to give God praise on the drums. I would like to know some of the most creative things that y'all do or maybe are working on please post it. peace 8)

Well i guess its more of experimentation in my opinion when I try and create lol. When I play to cd's I try and perfect my outside the pocket complex fills that I hear. Also when trying to come up with something new, I just substitute and switch around my kick, left and right hand around in common and favorite rolls that I use. It sounds different and fresh. Sometimes I even run into new things and I'm like wow Im gonna keep that one lol. Sometimes for the fun of it, I try and start and end my fills at times that aren't common and traditional. For example, instead of ending at the 1, i try and end up at the 2 or the 3. Or even more complex than that I try and come in on off time 8th notes. I dunno Maybe im on to somethin.....or not. lol

i am CONSTANTLY thinking of new things to do on the set.  most of the time it is a new hi hat pattern to go with the groove of a song,  or way to change the groove, or play it in a different way or genre- funk to latin is something i do a lot.
and with fills and rolls i am not neccessarily thinking of new ones while i am gigging or in service but i AM thinking of new places to put them or new applications for the roll/fill.
u know?

I'm having a hard time being creative on the kit. It doesn't flow out easy for me. I usually just mix up chops that I know, or throw in a different groove for half a beat but as far as new chops, THATS HARD! I need drum lessons after all these years. Chop building exercises.

One of the ways that I try and be creative on the kit is to switch around my set-up. It's truely funny how things will come to you when you may have to get your sticks there faster or when things arent in the same postition, sometimes you even mess up like hit a cymbal where the tom usually is or vise-versa, and it sounds better than the original move, when God works through you I believe that when it comes down to creativity the sky is the limit
