Are all Hammond's noisy?
« on: January 14, 2006, 03:17:32 AM »
I'm thinking of buying a Hammond (A-100).

I've only ever played 1 Hammond. It's was in a pretty bad, unloved condition. When idling (not being played) it made a loud , mechanical noise. I guess this was the tonewheels turning........it was very loud!

My question is: Do all A-100's make this loud mechanical noise?...or was it just this old, un-cared-for beast?!...... I would be playing the A-100 at home, mostly at fairly low volume, so the noise could be annoying!

Thanks!.........D

good upkept leslie units are fairly quite just spinning.  If you are buying one I would buy from a reputable organ repair shop or if you find one dirt cheap that needs repair, you will need someone who knows what they are doing to service it.

Thanks for the info..........just to be clear, i'm talking about a noise coming from the Hammond itself, not the Leslie.

The Hammond should not be making noise. Sadly, churches do not regularly schedule maintenance for their instruments.

Either it needed oiling (badly, a shame, chances are some of the bearings are already shot) or the start motor was not disengaging.  In any case, there will be nothing but a faint "whir" from a well maintained organ,

For the record, the A100 is for all intents and purposes the same as the B3.

Chances are it needs a serious oiling. I had the same problem with mine after I purchased it. It was intermittent at that point and some of the keys would play sour notes. I spoke with a Hammond tech who said that it sounded like it needed oil. I have also heard of the same problem on several Hammond forum sites. They recommended oiling it fairly well and letting it sit for a week, without turning it on. Then turning it on and letting it run for a while. After I oiled mine, I haven't had any noise coming from it. And like was said, it could already be shot. (How sad.) Although the noise could bring the price down considerably. :) And could be remedied easily and inexpensively. Oh, and be careful what oil you use, if you don't use proper oil, it could gum up over time and cause the same problem over again, only worse.

they start to squeel after about 10 years of neglect. All it need is 1/2 oz of hammond oil per year. Leslie speakers need about a drop of oil or two per year. You could start back with regular maintenance and bring it right back to good codition. Over oiling can really cause problems.
