Question about BIRCH (BBD and anyone else)
« on: January 12, 2006, 09:13:29 AM »
BBD- yo what does that birch sound like. i am thinking of getting a 13x7 birch snare. i was kind of turned off from birch when i heard a birch set a few years back it was real short/choked/ and not loud... but maybe that was just the dude's tuning.
but back to my original question- how does that birch snare sound and what are the dimensions.

anyone else know about birch snares??

I like birch drums, my star classics (Tama) are birch....But you know, I dont like the snare. I dont like the sound. Id go with maple is you want to go wood! But guy look into aluninum! It sounds like maple and steel mix.   The snare Im using most is a custom made KING snare baked brass with a baked on enammel finish. Its a waird baby green colour.

Birch has a short mid range so you don't get the body that you do from maple. If you want the cut of birch maple try a hybrid like The Virgil Donati 8ply (4-plies maple/4-plies birch).

Beech is a good wood option to birch as well as it is a srt of hybrid wood combining the character of maple and birch. Examples 13"x7" Akira Jimbo ... MOEDRUMS uses that always so check it out on his clip. The Sonny Emory signature is another and you can here that on many an EWF CD.

If you go birch by itself then go deep like the Birch Custom Absolute 14"x7"

Aluminum is a really good metal like BBD said. Weckl old main snare was a 14"x6.5" aluminum. It is a warm sounding metal.

...and it does sund really, really good!  freddyfusion, if you're in the market for a new snare, get this one!  I have one, and I can give a testamonial on this one (BTW - it's a 5"x14" snare)!

There's nothing wrong with birch if you have the right heads on it and tune it right. I played a Yamaha 5.5x13 birch and a Yamaha 7x14 birch that I would put up against just about any snare out there. As a matter of fact, I think Calvin is using a 7x14 birch. No complaints there. Drumheads and tuning.....that's where it's at.

Yo freddy, you should check out this site: www.indoorstorm.com. I'm in the market for a new snare, preferrably a metal one. Noble and Cooley got some real good snares, although they're pretty pricey. I've been looking at the alloy snare in the 4.75x14 and it sounds soooooo good. The thing I like about this website is that their products have sound clips, so you can hear first hand what the product sounds like. You also can shop around their other snare selections if you don't like my suggestion. I totally feel where you're coming from about being different. My main snare is a 13" and I love it, but I don't want my next snare to be the same size in diameter or depth. I myself, have noticed that my ear prefers the sound of the warmer metal snares more than anything else. I was sleeping on brass for a very long time because I had the idea that it was waaaay brighter than steel and I hate steel snares, but after listening and comparing the different metal snares I realized that brass sounds really good. Oh, and BBD ain't lying about that aluminum, that metal sounds gooooood!
My goal as a musician is to be better than myself.
check out my site www.tampogo.com/alsmith!!!

That would help... go for depth and that we'll really take care of you 6.5" or 7" depth.
