« on: January 29, 2006, 09:31:24 AM »
My church set has never changed the heads (we kept them in great condition...can we say 10 years? LOL) but I goin to change them now...right now they on the the factory heads (Tama) and I wondering for some suggestions for the heads (12, 14, 16)...they not goin to be mic'd and I want kind of a mellow sound.

Thanks for anything!

What kind of Tama is it? and how big is the church?

I would recommend Evans heads because to me they have a better feel and are warmer sounding than Remo's.

If the kit is not pro line, and you want a mellow sound, I recommend hydraulic heads on batter side, with resonant on the reso side. That is a very good combination. the heads are 2 ply with oil between the plys. People say that they really kill the volume of the toms, but I find that to not be as true as you would think. That will give you a very nice feel off the toms with nice resonance. These heads are very durable.

Another I would look at is going with a coated g2 with g1's on the reso side. The g2 is also a 2 ply head and is louder than the hydraulics, but its more of a natural undampened sound. the G1 is thicker than the reso, so that should make up for some pitch volume.

The coated g2's are a little warmer than the clear g2's, the clears are still good.

Good Luck & God Bless.

G2's have always been my head of choice.  I usually play the clear ones with the benera respnant heads on the bottom.  The clears give me a very big sounds.  give em a shot!

I'd go with the Remo Ambassadors, you can get them coated or clear, not to mention they're fairly chep and great sounding quality.

Go Evans G2. EVANS are the official heads that TAMA uses on all it high end kits. G2 clears to be exact.

This is also for the botton as well? Or get the G1s like what Eccentric-Rhythm said  for the bottom?

I play the same kit....But since my church is HALF the size of yours, I would definitely go with the G2's Coated or Clear, and get the G1's or Resonant on the Reso side.

Your church is big enough for the G2's....

God Bless.

G1s on the bottom... and the G2s on top... EMAD on the kick
So .. You would by the pack from Musiciansfriend.com=G2s w/the EMAD included for $59. Then also by the g1 clears for the bottom.

I would say remo heads. In my opinion remo makes the best heads, but I never played on evans heads. I'm kinda scared to buy a new brand of heads because i'm really picky about my heads. Remo never let me down, so i have no reason to change.
