That would be ROCK-A MY SOUL IN THE BOSOM OF ABRAHAM, OH ROCK-A MY SOUL.  Now that you mention it, what da world?!?!??!   ?/? ?/? ?/? :o ?/?

Thanks KPJ, the rest of the song  FINALLY did come to me, and then I couldn't get it out of my head ALL THAT NIGHT!!!

What about wading' in da water?? ::) ::)  Why would I want to wade in it .... if God's going to trouble it!

Another one............    Couldn't hear nobody pray?????..... Then they say "Hallelujah"  ?/? ?/? ?/?

Now I know these are Negro spirituals, and sometimes slaves had to sing in code ..... but I believe  it was code so the massa wouldn't tear their flesh off... for singing  praises unto God!

If that was the case, we should definitely document these songs... but hopefully not carry them into our worship services today where we have now have the LIBERTY to give Praize and Thanks unto the Lord!

That's just my opinion

I didn't read all the threads but I read enough to get a little upset. If God reveals a song to someone, it has meaning. Someone said "Cooling Water". That song has meaning. If you have ever felt the holy ghost, it DOES feel like cooling water flowing through your body! And if you don't like that song then you probably won't like Marvin Sapp's new song "River Flow". Ok...then someone said "As Long As I Got King Jesus". If you will listen to what she's saying...She says "I know He's a burden bearer, I know He's a heavy load carrier..." Man cannot be these things! God places people in your life to help you in life's journey but they cannot bear your burdens or etc! Man can help you to the altar but man cannot save your soul! That's what she means! You can't take this song that literal! With any song, think about the words before you sing them. I always ask God for meaning in a song before I play them or sing them! And...THE ANOINTING MAKES THE DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!!

Welcome to LGM!  You make some valid points, I wouldn't get too upset, though.  Everybody won't like every song, that's just a fact.

The point is a lotta songs 'sound' nice, tug on the heartstrings, but aint bibical.

Example, "pass me not, o gentle savior"

-Scripture sez the HE said "behold I am with you, even until the end of the age"

Someone can only call him "Savior" if they have accepted as such. otherwise, to everyone else, he's "jesus" (iousus, yeshua, dependin on where u from)

Once the acceptance is made, whatever promises that are in the new covenant are now automatically given.

To say "Savior do not pass me by" means that either you think he will not honor what he said, or that he really is not your savior.

-scripture sez that "a righteous man's steps are ordered by the Lord"

Again, if you're a believer, a righteous man, this is a given.

so then why are you asking the Lord to "order your steps"? Do you not think He would do it when He said He would?
This tells that one doesnt know who they are, what they have, and what they can do in Christ.

And they say lots of Praise/Worship songs have empty lyrics!
The old hymn writers may have been inspired, but they weren't perfect...people forget that it is the BEST hymns that get passed down, they forget about the unscriptural clunkers!

One chorus I like but can't figure out is...

Something got a hold on me...oh, yes it did
Something got a hold on me
I went to a meeting one night,
(next line unclear - I hear different versions - like "my heart wasn't right" ???)
Something got a hold on me.

Somebody illuminate this for me?

Yeah, I heard the "Holy Ghost" vamp.
But the part I'm scratching my head over is this...

(next line unclear - I hear different versions - like "my heart wasn't right" ???)

Maybe it's "My heart got put right" or something similar?

That's what the song's about actually. Part of the song goes

"It was at a revival, on the mourner's bench
I was filled with misery
The same God, that touched my mother
He laid his hands on me"

and

"They were singing "Come ye that love the Lord"
And I thought they were singing to me
Something hit me (unintelligible) my head, and ran down to my feet".

You're right. Once, somebody in another thread mentioned a  gospel song they thought had no meaning. After I broke the song down line by line and gave biblical references, they were finally able to see that the song really did have meaning. A lot of the time, we just listen to a song's words clumped together and automatically think that it doesn't make sense. That's why I think courses studying gospel music are a good idea. When you break something down and study it, you can find the true meaning(s) behind it and understand it better. Isn't that why we have Bible Study?

Well, I'll give you two gold stars if you can break down Donald Lawrence's Uzziah for me.  That is his worst song ever, IMO.  And really, the only "bad" one he's ever done (again, IMO).

I too, do not like Uzziah.  It draws on a doctrinal assumption that the death of Uzziah was some how causal to when the prophet saw the Lord... no one's ever proven that as far as I know, so to write a song on that "theory" is shaky ground from jump, IMO.

The lyrics source? My ears while listening to the 1959 rendition of the song by Rev. James Cleveland and the Voices of Tabernacle.  ;D

I've never heard Uzziah before. From what I've heard, that one would probably require a doctrinal dissertation to analyze, lol.
