the only thing I can think of is your overloading the input of the PA system. I was using an active direct box (had a battery)  and an active bass. I got all kinds of crazy noises, tried a passive bass and it went away but it was not the bass I wanted so I went to a passive direct box.

my suggestion is to lower the volume of your amp starting with the pre-amp (called gain or pre-gain)

Try a direct box and not using the amp.

Compression.  Get a compressor. It will keep you in a better dynamic range.

Check out the Carl Martin compressor/limiter.  EBS also makes a nice one.

DISTORTION REMEDIES?

I've had this problem as well.  I run through my eq (Ampeg SVP-Pro) into the
house system.  As long as I'm not slapping it sound ok.  But as soon as I slap and pop, it sound muddy... horrible in my opinion.  You think using a compressor will help with the sound??
Anybody ever tried using the compressor from another pre-amp in conjunction with your primary pre-amp (my old pre-amp has a compressor)?
