study jazz!!!!!!
« on: February 04, 2006, 06:07:02 PM »
if you guys would get a jazz theory book you can name virtually any chord. Many of these chords you guys name in these posts are "altered dominants" such as Ab/c

take Cdom7, better yet dom 9 and flatten or augment a few notes here and there particularly the 5th and the 9th. You will find "phatter chords" by doing this.

Normally Cdom9  is played Lh/rh:

C-E-Bb/ D-E-G

Instead "alter" the the 9th and the 5th which are the D and G notes in this particular chord and raise it to like like this

C-E-Bb/ D#-G#

Do this in every key.

Hey trunk...

I agree with 100%.. a $30 to $40 dollar investment on a theory book WILL take your playing to that next level..

That chord you posted a definitely a hot chord!!

I use that chord to get to the 4.. when I wanna keep the melody the same..

Example..

In the key of Ab.. I can use that chord to go from the 1 to the 4..

(1) AbEb/GCF
(F) CE/BbEbAb
(4) DbAb/CEbFAb

(F) denotes a filler chord

1 in this example is a AbMaj7 with 6 (F) added
4 in this example is a DbMaj7 with 9 (Eb) added

I use this alot and it sounds good because that top melody note stays the same it's very smooth!

Also I believe this is the ditone that Jamal talks about in his DVD.. I don't have the DVD but from listen to Jamal.. he's another one that I listen to alot and learn from constantly.. he use these type of chords alot as well!!

What is that jazz book, and does it have a CD or DVD to go with it. I'm a visual learner so having a DVD would help; having the audio CD will help with hear and playing the chords or runs that are on the page.

Thanks

Absolutely!  Gospel music, especially these days, derives alot of it's sound from jazz.  I would encourage everyone to study jazz and understand the theory behind it.

...And the cool thing about this major shift in sound is that the younger musicians are growing up hearing this stuff. So, that sound is "in their ear" as opposed to a person like me who has to go back and reconditon my ear!

I dont  believe so I think the thread was just encouraging you to learn the theory and scale chord relationships etc

there are so many good ones out there its really a matter of your level

mark levine puts out two good books on jazz which breaks down the basics and gets into advanced concepts

John novello

puts out a couple of real winners

john valerio puts out a post bop jazz book and a stride swing book

this is just what aI know of there are so many others out there
