I don't know if anyone else here will agree but to me it's more an issue of "quality not quantity"... although that also is not entirely true in itself.

What do you mean?

Well I'm glad you asked! :D

To be a GOOD drummer:   Most here will not recommend, but agree, that you would "probably" be fine with approx 1 practise a week. Length of time is non issue for now. Provided that your musical & drumming ability is better or just on average & based on the fact that your fine with your playing ability for the moment.

To be a GREAT drummer:   This is where the "quality" starts to become more necessary. To push yourself to the next level you've really got to COMMIT yourself to a practise session where you ARE... practising rudiments, practising licks, using a metronome etc... basically everything you do is NOT a jam but your pushing the limits of your drumming ability. There's nothing wrong with jamming but if you've chosen to be a GREAT drummer then this is the territory that comes with being great.

This would require, on average & depending on musical knowledge/ability, 3 practices a week. As for length of sessions, generally the more you learn, the more have to practise which equals MORE time needed to practise. But as a minimum for a GREAT drummer you'd look at... at least 1 hour.

Sabe, school me if I am misleading.

The key to practice is: Don't practice what you know practice what you don't know. Thats the key...

That sounds dead-on!  A concise practice regimen is key to becoming a great percussionist/drummer!

It is definitley a quality issue (Something emphasized by Thomas Knight (AIM instructor and player for Deborah Killings, Dallas Austin etc) first and foremost however quantity is a necessity.

Check out how thorugh this practice plan is. I found it in one of my many gatherings.

Im no drummer but I think its as fast as you are able to learn the different styles of music. I was going to learn all the drum beats on my keyboard. I think that would make me proficient. I would not probably be able to do every drum roll in the world but I think if I did that I could keep a pocket and play at church. Im a beginner so someone could educate me on it. I think its about timing. Its frustrating playing with drummers who cant keep up or are trying to do to much and cant keep a straight beat. I now feel that you can become pretty good on any instrument in a year. It depends on how much time you have on your hands and how much you understand the concepts of music or the style you are trying to play. I find that Im the most effective on keys when I just practice the basics in each key. Im guessing for drums the basics would be stuff like paradiddles, playing different timings(styles), and working on cleaning up your playing.
Vision without action is just day dreaming. I miss practicing.

Being a musician period takes the discipline and accountability of the priesthood that so many Christian musicians lay claim to yet hold no real reverence for. Being a great musician. Being a steward of the great gift of music and art requires self-discipline, self-sacrifice (putting in the time in the woodsheed, buying pro gear instead of clothes etc, going to clinics instead of the movies and amusement parks, buying instructional DVDs instead of video games), submission to a teacher (master), a servants heart (serving the music not serving self, serving the Giver and alowing His glory to shine through), creating works of purpose (music instead of beats and originality instead of cheap unlearned cliche... because priest are learned).

When reading the definition of a musican it points back to minister/ministry so, be you operating within the church or secular arenas your purpose is still that of ministry. The question is how responsible are you to your message. Have you taken your talen (not talent) and multiplied it to the glory of the Master that givith? This is the "x" factor in why some secular songs touch people so. The truth in the song/music is the ministry... the ode to music and the giver of music... the desire to help one through a difficult time, overcome an issue of life, to give a testimony of victory... That's what music is about. That's what being a musician is. Most music on the radio etc has become perverted by man ego getting him/her into the wrong situations and subject matter and lack of responsibilty or accountability as a musician/minister.

For most of us the answer is no, myself included. This shows in whether or not we practice, how much we practice, the quality of our practice and the level of our understanding. Even though I have great understanding I find it a constant challenge to remain steadfast to the calling of being a true musician in the mist of circumstance.

If only it was as easy as answering the question of "How much practice?"

I find that Im the most effective on keys when I just practice the basics in each key. Im guessing for drums the basics would be stuff like paradiddles, playing different timings(styles), and working on cleaning up your playing.

The basics are learning to read music notation and the 40 International P.A.S. (percussion Arts Society) Rudiments, learning stick control and learning 4-way (4-limb) full body coordination because the drumset requires total body control and independence of limb to play poly-rhythmic music. Then learning the styles that have become basic to the drumset arfirican based 12/8 and 6/8 timng and patterns that became the basis of jazz, blues, country, rnb, and rock as well as Brazilian, Latin and Afro-Cuban styles.

Learning how to feel the pulse of the music and play dynamically and phrase musically is a whole other thing.

In reality most people will not learn this in a year at a basic level without 3+ hrs a day of proper strict formated practice and a really good teacher to keep them honest through strict evaluation. Even those with a musical calling will not acheive what they should without the above (that is not to say they want be considered good by the average listener but they would be sadly disappointed in a controled environment of recitals and music competition and concervatories).

We do an injustice judging/advising people on gospel/church folk standards because in most cases it does not incompass real-world musician variables. 2-years proper discipline (DVDs, private instruction, workshops, band camps, summer certificate programs) will set you apart. If you ever get introduced to that envirnment you'll see why I say that.
