5 string bass question
« on: June 11, 2007, 12:02:12 PM »
I'm now winging on the bass guitar and came from the 6- string electric guitar.  I have a 4 string bass which is nice and playing scales on it is pretty easy because it's basically the same as the electric guitar, just thicker strings.  My question is,

With a 5 or even a 6 string bass: i notice that there's a low B string on the 5 string bass.  The notes on the string differes from the electrice whis is

Electric is:                               Bass guitar:

E, A, D, G, B, E                         B, E, A, D, G

Do i need to get a separate scale book for that added not or just play the same pattern (scales)?

I would say get a whole different book. However you can use what you know on lead on your bass. You just have to remember that your Strings are tuned in 4ths from top to bottom instead of the way your guitar is tunes. I'm saying it this way because of the way you said your bass is tuned.

Just remember notes will never change from bass to guitar. The pattern of the notes may differ. I hope that is making sense.

You won't need a seperate book. the pattern is the same regardless of strings. just remember that you have 5 extra low notes than the 4 string.
Keep God first and he'll do the rest!!!

You don't really need a separate set of scales for a 5-string bass.  Just remember that y our B string is not the E string.  Now since the bass is tuned in perfect 4ths, you could pretty much play the same scale pattern all over the neck (it's a little different on the guitar because of the major 3rd interval between the G and B strings).  So if you want to play a D major scale, you can play it starting on the A string at the 5th fret or on the low B starting at the third fret utilizing the same pattern.
