Back to da basics?????
« on: February 22, 2006, 11:36:35 PM »
OK. I dont think I made myself clear the first time.......

I actually taught myself how to play bass by learning different songs and paying attention to the different changes and formats and by memorizing lines and runs.  The only time I pay attention to notes is when Im tuning my bass. Other than that, I just memorize frets. Basically, I play by ear. I've gotten good enough that I can hold my own during church service. Since I've gotten this far by myself and developed my own style, would taking lessons help elevate or just confuse me?
Give a man chords to a song, you help him for a day. Teach him theory and you help forever!!!

I think lessons with a good teacher will help. Someone that's not going to teach you just riffs. Someone how can take what ya got in head and add to that.

peace hope this helps

It's good that you learn by hearing, but it will be better if you take lessons.  It will make you a better bass play. :)

Yep, but like MikeGee said, you have to find a good one.

But if you can't find a teacher, I think that if you 'structure' your practice time you can progress fast.

I use to just site down, play a few scales, listen to a few songs an dplay with them and call that practice.  :|  I wasn't really getting anyhere.

But now, I ssit down and follow a rountine like DJ's (posted here somewhere) and now I'm progressing much faster.
