I've been wondering about this to.  Since I'm just a beginner, I don't go into the church mixer (mainly because I don't want to be heard if I messed up ) but I've been wondering the same thing.

Why not do both.  Sometimes it's hard to hear youself if the PA system isn't that great (it's good to have monitors for the musicians too) or the Soundman doesn't balance out the levels well.  I like to go through my amp and the board.

I'm a rookie as well, but I was taken listen for about 3 months and just brought my bass to church. I was scared since I didnt know anything, but after about 2 months I'm less afraid. I'm working off trial and error. So 4hisglory..follow NIKE and "just do it"

I'm with you on this one... 4hisGlory... I run through my amp, because I hit some pretty sour notes at times, that would probably cause foks to throw rotten tomatoes at me...  am with djgroovin on running through both...

So when I get grown like djgroovin, I will either use my existing amp... it has a DI out on the back of it... or run through something like this.

My understanding of DI, or Direct Injection is that if the sound has to travel a long distance, lots can be lost, so this helps the sound out.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Di units exist because intsruments puts out an unbalenced signal which is not what the mixer/pa system ought to be receiving. The di converts that signal into a balanced signal, which is the same os simular signal as a micked voice or amp.

As for me and my church we don't us amps at all. We have house monitors and stage monitors. and my tone is good enough in that fashion for now. When things great more serious and involved I'll be using this.

Right Mike Gee:

"One of the most common applications for DI boxes is to connect equipment with high-impedance outputs (such as synths) to a mixer's low-impedance inputs using long cables (such as snakes or studio tie lines). Cables that must run a considerable distance should always be balanced and low-impedance to minimize signal loss, induced noise, and grounding problems.

If you were to run a long cable (say, 100 feet) from a guitar to an amp, it would completely load the guitar; you'd lose high-frequency response and add noise. However, if you connect the guitar to a nearby DI box with a short instrument cable, you can then run a 100-foot mic cable to a mic preamp near the guitar amp. The mic preamp's output is then connected to the input of the amp."

Personally, I PREFER to go right into the church PA, but lately I've been going just directly into my amp.  For some reason, if I go direct into the PA, my bass takes one side of the PA output and leaves only the other side for the vocalists' mics.  I'm going to experiment with some different cabling arrangements when we rehearse Saturday, because I prefer the balanced sound of the bass in the mix with all the other inputs, including the electronic drums that are played through the PA.  Right now we have keys, drums and voices coming from the speakers in the back of the church and my bass coming from my amp at the front.

By the way, I believe DI is for Direct Input, not Direct Injection.  When I do go into the church PA, I use a Sansamp BDDI (Bass Driver Direct Input)

James

I've also seen it called Direct Input... atleast that's what it says on the back of my amp...

Do you think it could be one of those interchangable words depending on the product you are using?

I don't want to sound like a Moron... ;D

I don't think you're sounding like a moron, it could be that both definitions fit.  I work in the automotive industry where Direct Injection has a very specific meaning.  That definition would not fit what these Direct Input boxes do, so I could be unnecessarily narrowing down the definition.  I do know that the literature that came with my SansAmp BDDI refers to it as a Direct Box and defines BDDI as B*** Driver Direct Input.

James

LOL!...

I know... when I did a google search for "Direct Injection" I got a bunch of stuff about Diesel engines, but I also got some stuff about Music Boxes.

thanks for the insight.

Hook your bass up through a direct box! That way you can have a feed going to the mixer and still use your amp as a monitor. The direct box also lifts ground noises....They make dir. boxes just for basses, just google it.
