Is it too late
« on: May 03, 2006, 02:21:56 PM »
My desire has always been in for the music ministry.  I always visioned of me singing and now that I'm in my late twenties, the desires increased.  I went and purchased a clarinet and the book.  See I use to play the clarinet and never kept up with it.  My desire is also to play the piano, so I went and brought a miniature keyboard.  Even my two year old daughter is interested on how to play the keyboard and the drums.  I have song on the choir at a baptist church and now at The Greater Allen AME Church in New York.  It almost feels like a vision with just a brief passion because it is not taking action it is just sitting inside me.  I know that just starting off will take some time and years of pratice.  I love to sing but I vision to write my own music.  I was not raised up in church.  Where do I start and Is It Too Late?

Welcome aboard and May God Bless you. Do you go to church now, if so, share your visions with the Pastor. Follow the advice and pray. Always continue to practice and pray. God makes a way and gives opportunities and you have to be in a place to receive it.
We all sin, we falter, but God forgives.

As far as writing music, you can start right now.  Just take whatever ideas God gives you write it down and put it on a small cassette recorder, you can always perfect it later.
I know for a fact there are many annointed singers and muscians at your church, introduce yourself to them, let them know your desires, I'm sure they will be willing to help you.

Lastly, practice, practice, practice.  Learn all 12 scales and ask someone who plays to teach you one "simple" song, and practice that song until you know it like your name.

Don't be discouraged!

I, like yourself, have recognized that God has given me a gift of music by ear (one, that I have, to my dismay, sat on for years).

I am in my early 40's now but my desire is strong.  I have prayed and asked God to develop this gift he has given me!

I received so much encouragement from this site and the other musicians here who have encouraged me!

Meanwhile, I sing in the praise and worship at my church and I have teamed up with the music director to teach me more theory to go along with playing by ear! My desire is to play in church!

I have also contacted another "anointed" music director at another church just to sit, listen, and receive advice on how to grow in the music ministry.

Lastly, do not sow doubt or discouragement into your life by comparing yourself with others that have already progressed in their musical gift for God has a purpose and plan for each of us.  Exercise faith by getting busy praying, playing, and preparing.

God knows your heart and will make a way if this is His desire for you!

I'll keep you in prayer!

......Is It Too Late?

It's not the skill of the man, it's the WILL of the man.  A dedicated beginner can surpass a lazy intermediate in short time.

Man, if you dedicate yourself completely, you can be a SICK musician by the time you're in your mid 30's.....

Remember......even the longest journey begins with one step.   :)

Sir you said something interesting, "practice that song until you know it like your name." While my ear is pretty good, I have a hard time hearing especially when the chords sound so distorted...jazzy...is that reharmonization? Help  (kjeldridge@gmail.com)
