I want to get back to playing bass. What is a good starter bass that I can purchase? I don't want anything outrageous, but I want something that is good.

A used Fender Jazz Bass. If it turns out that you absolutely hate it, you'll be able to sell it for what you paid for it.

a friend of mine bought the ibanez starter package. it comes with a 4 string bass, practice amp, tuner, and a couple of other goodies for less than $300. it sounds good to me.

I started out with a similar package. I tell you what...Ibanez makes a great entry level bass.
