THE DREAM
« on: March 06, 2006, 01:16:22 AM »
So.......the other night I had this dream that my band (THE SACRED GROOVE) played THE FRIARS CLUB in Beverly Hills CA. Anyway at the end of the night they had a jam session and I guess it's not uncommon to have some of the members of this exclusive club come up and sit in. So we're jammin and I look up and there's Wayman Tisdale....whoah..I think to myself in my dream. So we jam a while. He was cool.....much better than I thought. Just as I'm thinkin "my friends will never believe this" I look up again and behold......there stood the man himself.....the legend.....a bass playin machine.....MARCUS MILLER was plugin in and he wanted a piece of what was goin on. So there we were...in my dream....jammin....Wayman, Marcus, and me, with the rest of the band and few others who wante to sit in as well.

The next mornin I woke up. I was trippin thinkin how hot that dream was. Then, all of a sudden it hit me....it wasn't a dream at all.....it really happened!
I was fortunate enough to play on the same stage with Marcus Miller and Wayman Tisdale. To watch him work was a lesson all in itself. He was like a hawk lookin, watchin , listenin to EVERYTHING that was going on. It was another level of interaction between musicians that, quite frankly, in my 20+ years of playin, I've never experienced before. I held the bottom while they swapped off soloing and I cant explain it but it was just there.....but on another level. I set up a few different grooves during the jam (he is the groove master) and they just went for it.
I just had to share this with the LGM family.......I'm still trippin
Here it is...Click on the links to view the pics....

Im on the far right and Marcus is on the far left......Wayman is the big fella in the middle..
Jay Hall - Guitar (The Sacred Groove)
Steve Collins - Keys (The Sacred Groove)
Gerald Jones - Percussion (The Sacred Groove)
Demiyon Hall - Drums (featured in the GC shed)
The guy on the horn - From the band Impromptu
Malcolm Jamal Warner - (the Cosby kid , Theo) came up and did some spoken word
It was HOT!!!!!

Congrats Mudane...

I will be in PA at Gerald Veasley's camp.  I know we will probably play together.  Actually he as the students scheduled to do a jam session at the Jazz Base his club.  How do you approach something like this.  When you look up to people how is your mentality when playing with them.  You want to go for what you know but you don't want to get you neck chopped off, if you know what I mean.  I mean you don't want to disrespect them by looking like you're trying to battle them.

Is this taken as disrespect or do musicians respect that!  Oh yeah, I got the feeling Mr. Wooten my pop through too!  I gotta check his schedule.  Doug Wimbush, Adam Nittia and few other fellas will be there also.

wassup t.j.
man i cant begin to advise you on how to approach playin with legends. all i did was try to hold the bottom......real simple...groove....it was tough knowin that marcus is the groove master. but anyway i was just pluggin away at different funky bass lines while everybody else soloed over them. i'll tell you though....if you get an opening to show your stuff.....dont hesitate even half a second. players gotta respect when you git yours but its gotta be the right time and you betta git it! that chance didnt come for me cause there were so many other musicians on stage but it was still cool......i would have taken it if it was there. wouldnt want to try and take whats not there....thats when you fall on your face and get no respect.

Appreciate that man...I just chill in the back and do like you did and hold down the bottom.  If asked then I'll give them what I can.  That's sound advice man!  Thanks...hope you get all that's coming to you.  Keep up the good work.
