No, my brother!! Playing the organ is very different than playing the piano, because you have so many things going on when you are playing the organ than when you are playing the piano or the keyboard!  Bishop Cole

to me, it is more helpful to think of them as two seperate instruments, like the accordion is different from piano, but it's also different like a sax is different from a guitar.

When you play piano, the way you play, what you play is different, you're paying attention to the volume of each note, you have that sustain pedal, you have the piano sound that fades out.

When you're playing organ, you're less concerned about the velocity of each note, you actually have way less resisitance(this can make it harder for beginning organists to get used to), you have this note that will continue to play as long as the electricity bill is paid and you have the drawbars, the Leslie, and the pedals to play, and you're playing from a different perspective.

The roles that a piano and an organ have are completely different, though complimentary.

that's why I think of them as 2 different instruments.
Thanks for letting me hang with you guys!

I used to think that if u could play one, you could play the other.....till I got my first Organ Lesson   ::) boy was I wrong.

This switch adds Tremolo to the Leslie

This switch changes the output from the Leslie to the Organ Cabinet

This one turns the Vibrato on and off

This one Changes the KIND of Vibrato

This one Raises/lowers the Reverb

This one turns on the Percussion

This one Changes the VOLUME of the Percussion

And I didn't even mention the Drawbars the Pedalboard or the Expression Pedal yet!!!!!!

This is a separate instrument.  No instrument requires more coordination, than the Organ, but then again no instrument allows you so much control to express yourself either.

Noooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!! :o :o :o

Hey, it's some work for sure, but once you got it you got it.  Somebody said today, you got to go thru the fire before you sound like fire...

Certainly it's different, but it's not impossible.

I remember going to a church in which our choir was invited to sing and they had an organ and an out of tune piano....guess what i chose to play :D I had a hard time trying not to play the keys on the piano that were completely out of tune. I probably should have took a shot at the organ ;D

ACTUALLY TO ME; BETWEEN PLAYING THE PIANO AND ORGAN IT TAKES THE SAME AMOUNT OF ENERGY BUT IT IS NOT EXPRESSED IN THE SAME WAY IF YOU WERE PLAY THE PIANO OR THE ORGAN.

WHEN I'M PLAYING THE ORGAN I USUALLY TRY TO PAD AND STAY IN THE BACKGROUND. SO SINCE I TRY TO PLAY IN THE BACKGROUND I TRY NOT TO DO ALOT OF DIFFERENT CHORDS/RUNS. I JUST PLAY BASIC CHORDS. AND THE ENERGY IM NOT USING WHILE I PLAY THE ORGAN, I SPEND IT ON CHANGING SETTINGS/DRAWBARS/CHORUS,VIBRATO/LESLIE/ECT.

BUT WHEN I PLAY THE PIANO I TRY TO LEAD AND BE THE MAIN INSTRUMENT. SO I SPEND MORE ENERGY ON CHORDS/RUNS. SO SINCE THERE IS NO SETTINGS ON THE PIANO TO CHANGE BUT THE SUSTAIN PEDAL THERE IS NO EXTRA ENERGY NEEDED.

BUT PLAYING THE PIANO AND ORGAN IS TWO DIFFERENT BALLGAMES.

Playing the piano opens up more room for energy and fast glissiandos. Playing the Organ is more like feeling your way through. When I play a piano I would just strike the keys. It seems like when I play an organ my hands tend to pet the keys or slide alot. With the piano my hand comes up very fast. With an organ my stroke is a whole lot slower and open for expression.

I think the piano and the organ and the keyboard are all alike, but different at the same time.  Piano is where every "keys" player should start.  It will build a strong foundation.  Plus to make a piano sound good...you really have to work.  That is not the same for an organ or a keyboard.  On an organ, you have to do to make it sound good is turn it up loud or just pull out drawbars and stuff "LOL" with a keyboard it is a little more difficlut but still the same concept.  But in theory they all play the same.  I mean keys are keys, RIGHT???  Organ does take a lot more coordination. You have to be able to do a lot of things at once.  I love the piano, and I can go to town on one. (just because of God though), but an organ....boy that is a whole different type of fun.

that is not true because my favorite organist is nasty on the organ but  when he gets on the keyboard somethings missing no bass it sounds weak

dont look at the sound as weak...just as a different instrument.  kind of like a painter using crayons...you would not say the painter is weaker...he is just using a different instrument...(i hope that makes sense)...

but one problem is that your favorite organist may be playin the keyboard the same way he would play the organ....using a lot of chords for phatness but has no hands left to run bass (on the organ he can just do all the bass work with his feet)

In my opinion, it takes more out of you to play the piano than the organ.  Even when you have mastered the coordination of the organ.  it takes more force from your arms and hands to get the volume you need. With the organ, you can strike and hold chords and let the volume pedel do the rest.   if you are a pianist playing by yourself, it will take more effort to carry the music - soloing, chording and bassing all on one keyboard.   It could be tough!

yeah but all that work that u put into making a song sound off da chain on tha piano is wut makes u so off da chain else where. I play an organ every sunday...and I am a one man band (besides our drummer, who is awesome) and being able to do everything that I can do on a piano...solos, run bass, right hand chords...I can do it all...I'm not great or anything, but being able to carry a song on the piano makes me that much stronger on the organ.

I have to say that in my experience in playing the Piano/Organ that it is very different!
People that play the organ all the time have a tendency to be very sloppy piano players.
However I play both all the time and practice both to the equal amount of time so that way
there is a balence between them.
Playing the Organ takes more coordination that playing the piano.
So to me there is a mjor difference.

If You only play piano, you can't just get on an organ for the first time and sound good.

Likewise, if you only play the Organ, you can't get on a keyboard and kill it.

I've been playing the Organ exclusively recently, and I'm finding it hard to play keys now.  With the Organ you can let you hands wander while your foot handles the bass.  You can play bass in your foot, chord in your right hand, and play a tritone in your left hand.

I actually feel Limited on the Keyboard now.
