I love reggae music...this clip would be better if the drummer would let the music breathe more. Too many chops...at least establish the groove.

Aye Funky,

There's a lick that your keys man does (it starts at about 3:05 on the clip) & you guys follow him then come back to the reggae beat.

What song is that lick from?

The One-Drop in raggae is one 3. I helps to be comfortable playing triplets because the high parts are trips and shuffles. As well the groove actually is a "Big Two"  feel which is 6/8.

Example:
1 & a Drop, 1 & a Drop...  or  1 2 3 Drop 5 6 , 1 2 3 Drop 5 6...

Your accents are up the up beats on the cymbals and the fill tend to be 3s and 5s etc oddd number strokes.

I forgot to mention that you also need to get comfortable with e metric modulation from 4/4 to 6/8 ad back. Especially when you get to doing a Steppers raggae song like "Jammin' that has "Four on the Floor" plus the drop and the syncopated trip/shuffle hat. The key to playing raggae is to watch the people... If they are not moving you are doing something wrong.

I agree.. this guy would never hold down a raggae gig. He is too all over the place. Folk cannot dance to it, they cannot feel the music groove and breathe. Raggae is all about the spirit. There was way to much riffing going on here. He never fully established the groove. Raggae has this "deep dish" guly of a groove that must not move. It's like the Grand Canyon of grooves. A year ago I quit a twice a week gig in Daytona Beach because I was playing with 2 Jamaicans and I could not hang. This music is personal for them and at the time I just didn't feel the music as it should be played. Now I have a better understanding of it.

It's all about that 6/8 half time swing and the guitar player controls the tempo with his strumming.

My bad... When you said you were playing on this I thought you were on the drums! But, yeah holla back once you've figured out which part I'm talking about. It's towards the end & I'm sure I've heard it from another song...

Its funny but most gospel recordings coming out of the U.S., Y'all cant play reggae. We laugh and call it American reggae.

Lol! Thats it! I knew it sounded familiar... Thanks drumkey23 ;D

Well, funky I asked about that specific lick in the clip cause I thought that (if you guys tidied it up) it might actually work with that reggae song. I'm guessing you guys
play that for a specific song and not just for shedding?

Yea but jus cuz u take ur licks on da beat means dat it makes sense, or its correct? All ur licks were done on time....Dey were good, but I like wen a drummer can fill off da beat, and still bring it back without the musicians goin off da beat totally, no wat i mean???..sorry guys if im 2 FUNKY for yall. Its about creatviity for me. If u hear us in a service or sumthin, trust, we wont be playin da same way...and SabianKinght, da drummer actually plays for a reggae Sky Band in Europe.
