If You Were A Betting Man...
« on: March 22, 2006, 02:42:12 PM »
....and you had to choose between Thomas Lang & Virgil Donati in a drum battle ...

Which one of these amazing drummers would it be?

I know we discussed this not too long ago ... but, the more I watch Lang's DVD, the more I'm certain he's technically superior to ALMOST every drummer alive ......

....then their is Donati. This is really an interesting topic to me. Chime in if you'd like to. If not, well - your breath stinks.  ;D

...although Lang's feet are just crazy, I'd take Donati.  They are both geniouses though, no doubt.

Personally, I think this is too close to call.

I watched Thomas ... then Donati ... then Thomas ... then Donati ... then Thomas ... then Donati ...

While I was watching Donati, I decided he'd be the best choice. When I was watching Thomas .. I decided I'd go with him...

Conclusion?

They seem to be so evenly matched - that the only advantage one had over the other, in my view, is that I was listening to him play at the moment. Heh...

Amazing stuff...

Virgil.  Hands down.  I think that Virgil has more to offer musically than Thomas.  Don't get me wrong now, I like Thomas a lot.  But i know for sure for MY money, i'll go with Mr. Dog Boots.

I think that they are both pretty equally matched. I think most folk would give it to Thomas because he will groove harder even in his sickest moments. Virgil will take we creative space jockeys off to the 11th planet (Planet X) and ot will be all over.

Musically right now for me it I am all about Thomas Lang because he makes all the impossibilitiesl SEEM possible. You see Virgil rip and you go I want to be like him but that is just a dream. Thomas' DVD brings it home with the practice pads.

Having seen Virgil in person and will catch him again later this year as well as having his Power Drumming vid and his 1997 MD Fest video and watching all his clips on his web site and even some of his tracks downloaded an run through Amazing Slowdowner, I still go "dude is on another level".

Enjoy a lil Virgil pocket :

I would lean more in favor of thomas lang simply because he seems to be more well rounded and if did'nt use is double pedal he would still have chops for days .

The same can be said for Virgil. Do you research. Virgil even studied with Philly Joe Jones. They both write and compose entire band parts. Fact is neither of these guys really has a weak point that any of us could really find. We may not like or understand some of the stuff they play but the guys have mastered the instrument many times over. The areas they are exploring most of us will never personally experience.... sad but real truth.

I am not knocking your choice just questioning your reasoning behind what you said.
