Im so glad u asked because he is one of my favorite drummers from my home town Detroit,  ;D but anyway, the drummers name is Dana Davis, and yes he is playing to a track. The best way i can explain the beat is he is playing a straight funk beat but in between the snare hits he does two quick double taps on the snare, but he is still keeping the hi-hat and kick straight the whole time unless he does a roll or something.  Me personally, I don't think that  album shows how good he is on set. He really keeps it quite simple but nice on this album, but to see him play live is a whole nother story! :o last time i saw him play live was at Ron Winnans family and friends IV and i was just 13 yrs old and they took and offering and while he was playing this funk grove he did a solo and the band dropped out, im mean sick rolls and his foot was so quick, after he was finish he brung the band back in so smooth Yo! but other then what i told u about the beat, if u dont understand, i would have to show u man! but GOD BLESS! ;D

It sounds like a double stroke roll, played with a triplet feel.

To explain it in another way, it's a triple ratamacue without the ruff at the beginning.

Easy enough.   ;D

...and, without the accent at the end of that ratamacue.

Easy enough.   ;D

To be honest with u the beat is not even hard, u just have to listen and play with it and you will get it! ;D I dont know man, I didnt have to play along with it , it just came easy to me, but I do understand that its different for some drummers because we all learn things in different ways! :)

Man Dana Davis is heavy!!! I remember watching a Winans video from the eighties and my man Dana did one of the sickest soloes I've heard to date--FROM THE EIGHTIES MAN!!! I can't believe you were at Family and Friends IV live recording. I love that album. I really like the way Dana played on I Am The One.
My goal as a musician is to be better than myself.
