A scale is just a group of notes that start and end on the same note.  The major scale is just a specific name for a specific type of scale.  The formula is:

_ W _ W _ H _ W _ W _ W _  H  _

W = whole step
H = half step

Example, C major scale: C  D  E  F  G  A  B  C
Real musicians play in every key!!!
