They need to learn to spell. What's "decipline"?

I'm just joking, man.

Ummm ... they need discipline & work ethic. Being able to zoom in on a problem, and sticking with it until you get it right. Not start doing more "exciting" things, when you should practicing the things that you deem less exciting, but very important.

I am glad this is being brought up! This morning a friend/associate called me because he is in a bind. His drummer has left town and he wants me to fill in for 2 nights for him at a revival for his church. Now i have dealt with him before and the way he does business ain't right, but i haven't been doing anything just practing so i want ot do it but i am leary of him. Now he didn't metion any thing about being paid, but i am how much should i charge him  for the 2 nights.

If pay is involved then he should pay you at least $150 -200 for the two nights that is like $75-100 a night. He is passing the collection plate both nights I know. You are being called in to play a last minute gig. That is just respect. and just.

No offense to anyone but this topic is about things that happen to working musicians and aspiring "working" musicians. God will no doubt bless His servants but it is the churches responsibility to pay the church musicians (permanent, regular). The music department and especially guest musicians. The church pays the plumber. They pay the electrician. They pay the pastors car notes. But they cannot pay the music ministry... The devil is a liar. No labor goes on reward. The church is supposed to take care of those in the ministry. Stop making excuses for some folks/churches/ministries being out of order.

Before anyone starts in.. I have travel 14 hrs and played for free for a ministry/pastor before but my lodging and my food was taking care of. I play every week currently not for a salary... I get a love offering. I didn't ask I was automatically given that respect. This ministry which does not have a permanent music dept does that for any musician that sits in. That is respect. That is decent and in order.  When ever I go to a church ministry and see they need help I will offer to sit in need be with no expectancy of pay but an expancy or reward. And still I say that a working musician of ministry should be paid. Your pay should reflect your experience/capabilities just as it does in the world.  Just like on any job but especially working a minstrell you better be prepared and on point in tune giving your best. Don't be like Cain.

I would agree with you on the amount to a point. And that point is....."how big is this church?". That's just something that can't be overlooked, you know? If the church has like 8 people (example), it might be unrealistic for them to put out $150. Even if a musician is worth that, the church's budget has to be considered. On the other hand, if the guy is paying you out of his pocket, then he should be able to come up with some sort of compensation for your time. The paid musician thing is a case-by-case type of thing, ya know? Good word though Sabe!

Give me a break slice! Ok you give me your pay check and Ill live off that! What you cant! Why? Oh you need to feed your kids and pay your bills!

I don't care brother. If they offer you money then you should take it but you should never demand money man. God called musicians to play to his glory not for money. Honestly if you weren't going to get paid would you still play?

I hate to say it, but the church got some of these dudes brainwashed. They convinced you to not ask for money, while they're riding around in expensive Euro cars!

Man, whatever.

Let me tell you something brother. WHO CARES WHAT THEY ARE RIDING IN. If they offer you money take it but please don't demand it. JUST PLAY TO HIS GLORY. GOD WILL BLESS YOU FOR IT MAN. DON"T WORRY ABOUT THE MONEY.  GOD WILL BLESS YOU JUST FOR STAYING HUMBLE.YOUR SKILL WILL INCREASE TEN FOLD I'm TELLING YOU.
Most of the best musicians that I've ever heard are the ones that don't get paid. THERE ARE GREAT MUSICIANS IN MY AREA WHO DON"T ASK FOR A DIME. MUSICIANS ARE HERE TO HELP USHER IN THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD. YOU CONTROL MANY IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF A SERVICE WHEN YOU MINISTER THROUGH MUSIC. YOUR MOTIVES HAVE TO BE RIGHT. YOU LITERALLY HOLD SOULS IN THE PALMS OF YOUR HANDS. YOU CAN HELP DRIVE A PERSON TO BE SAVED THROUGH YOUR PLAYING. SEE IT"S MORE THAN THE PAYROLE.

BE BLESSED :)

CHURCHES AND MINSTRIES WILL GAIN RESPECT FOR YOU IF YOU REMAIN HUMBLE AND WILLING.
AFTER A WHILE THEY WILL START OFFERING YOU MONEY BECAUSE THEY KNOW YOU ARE FOR REAL AND NOT JUST IN IT FOR THE MONEY. :)

Well that's about all I have to say :)

IF I HAVE OFFENDED ANYONE I'm SORRY  :'(

DIDN"T MEAN TO STORM IN ON YOUR CONVERSATION

I just had to get this off of my chest though ;D

DID GOD CALL FOR A PASTOR RIDE IN A 2006 CADDY with Spinners and video and bang.               One of the reasons I quit playin at my original church about 8 yrs ago was because the amount of money I spent for travelin to church 6 times a week, the extra maintenance for an aging car due to numerous traveling for extracuricular chuch activities and my expenses and wear for my drums/hardware because the church was too cheap to invest in quality equipt. I asked the pastor to put me on salary because I was also a college student. My focus wasn't on money but I had to take off of work for church activities the least he could do was the proper thing. He gave me a pathetic answer on why it"s wrong for me to ask that. Then i proceeded without disrespecting the man to ask him is right that he lives in excess and has a 4 bedroom brickhouse with 3 vehicles paid for by the church. He couldn't answer me so I left. If i offended anyone, I can truly say I don't care because I'm not about being pimped or frauded out for anyone. HOWEVER I WILL PLAy for FREE for a ministry that is in order and on the side of right to truly give glory to GOD.

MAN I FEEL FOR YOU. MY PASTOR(My Father) IS NOT LIKE THAT. HE USES THE CHURCH's MONEY TO GET US THE BEST EQUIPMENT. WE GOT NEW PEWS LAST MONTH AND NEW CARPET LAID. I HAVE A NEW B3 with 2 leslies. Our drummer(my brother) has a  drumset with shure mics hooked up to it. He's talking about repaving the parking lot. There are some crooked preachers out there but I just happen to be under a very straight one. That's probaly the reason why I feel the way I do. Sorry for not seeing it from your point of view man. I have to agree with you on this that many preachers use the money for the wrong reason.

My father kills the common stereotype that if you drive a nice car then your ripping off the church. God DID MEAN FOR HIS PEOPLE TO HAVE 2006 cars and riches, BUT (As you said) IT HAS TO BE DONE THE RIGHT WAY. MY FATHER WORKED HARD ON 3 JOBS FOR NICE CARS. HE DOESN"T RIP OFF THE CHURCH. Not every preacher is crooked but unfortunately alot of them are. I've have been to some churches that won't even keep their bathrooms clean and I know they have the money. I mean the crooked curtains and everything. I think ( YOU COULDN"T EVEN STRAIGHTEN OUT THE CURTAINS?) I ask myself aren't You are suppose to put God's House over your own house. God's house should be nice and kept up not looking like junk. I agree with you man. The church has to learn to put God first and their richly possessions last.

Let me tell you somethin.  God gave the church 5 gifts.  Ephesians 4 verse 11 (Apostles, Prophets, Evangilist, Pastors and Teachers)  My friend, Musicians are not gifts.  They are luxery services!  We must get paid!  Stop all the brainwashing about not demanding money cause if they dont pay you, they are going to eventually pay someone else!

I"M BACK ;D

Who cares if they pay someone else as long as I did it to the glory of God I really wouldn't care.
You really sound quite crazy with your (WE MUST GET PAID) quote ;D  . I'm not trying to brainwash anyone. I'm just speaking the truth. Don't get me wrong. I'm not talking about playing for someone who you know is just as crooked as a question mark. I'm talking about playing under good caring spiritual leaders. How you feel if God sayed I am not waking you up this morning unless you pay me?
Give your gifts back to God. First of all the gifts and talent that you have are not yours. They are God's and he just gave them to you. Use His gift the best and most humble way you can. God's Gift is special and you can't put a price tag on that. :)

First of all, I wouldnt say nothin cause how could I hear God if I was sleep?  ;)  Secondly, its musicians like you who will forever hold the rest of us back.  You are probably the one who goes, "Why pay him, I'll play for free!"  Musicians need to stop undercuting and stabbing each other in the backs for gigs and stick together.  Unionize!

NO MAN I DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT STABBING ANYONE IN THE BACK. IF I KNOW ANOTHER MUSICIAN IS SET TO PLAY I WOULD NEVER TRY TO UNDERCUT HIM. I've HAD THAT HAPPEN TO ME BEFORE AND I PLAY FOR FREE(Unless you offer money).IT"S NOT A GOOD FEELING. THIS IS DRIVING AWAY FROM THE SUBJECT

If and only if I played secular music, but other than that whenever God chooses to bless me!!! Im not big on money or getting paid. I do what I do because I love to do it, whether there is money or not, and Im not going to let money hold me back. Now If I was doing full-time to where I couldn't work or something of course I have to take care of me and my family, but if me and my wife have a job thats doing us great why put the pressure on someone else, anyways when it's time god will let me know.............He will come to me!!!!!

Let's get back on subject or else.

Someone working in the kingdon as a musician has been getting stiffed by ministers/ministries/church folk and it is not right.

If being a working musician is not your thing please don't jump into this thread. We have had way to much emotional, doctrinal banter....

Thats just plain wrong.  That Pastor... sometimes you must ask yourself "Are these so called pasters called to be in ministry, or did they nominate themselves?"  What makes this situation sad is that, your old pastor is not the only one pulling this sort of stuff.  I have seen and found personally that a church will "use" you of your time, efforts, and money, to make them look good!  Bru, you did the right thing by leaving that church.  You will be blessed by God in His way in His time.  Just be patient.  Also about that pastor, he thinks he is in God's glory.  I believe he is getting his rewards right here on earth.
Thank you and may God bless you,
