augmented chords

im just starting out in learning to play, ive learnt my triad chords  with progressions 2-5-1/ 1-4-5 and currently learning my seventh chords, but i want to know what are augmented chords used for !! and why should i learn them, i keep hearing people say learn them as well

To change a chord to augmented you send the 5 up a half step. CEG>CEG#. Their used a lot in stress and relief, which is making a sound you would usually hear to get back to a familiar chord. They probably what you to learn them  so you can get a variety of chord sounds in your vocabulary and  to be able to jazz up your playing.
