Here's a video of me playing!
« on: April 12, 2006, 08:21:00 PM »
I finally got the guts to do this! So I just want to know what you guys think about it...good or bad? Constructive critisizm please! What was good and what can I work on? Don't kill me though. I've been playing for about 3 1/2 years. Its a lot easier when I'm playing with the praise team or to a track. I've never really put a solo together so I just threw a couple beats on there. Go easy on me here. I know it is kind of hard to hear because the camera I used doesn't record very well because its so loud in my room. I'm going to try and get recorded at church so you will hear what I really play like.
In the third video I tried to just keep a steady beat without any fills. The second one is kinda old so its just fooling around.
Thanks

Here's the link:

http://www.vmix.com/viewArtist.php?ID=34910

Watch the second and third video. If the third doesn't show up give it 20 minutes or so for it to be approved cause I just put it on there.

First off let me say I'm proud of you cause you did something that most seem to dread in here! Theres guys in here who triple your playing years and they wont put their stuff forward!

Your playing had power, you don't see too many amateur girls who play with power. If you want to go pro your playing need allot of work! I saw your guitar video, at your age choose one instrument get awesome at it then move to the next one. Id say drums is your best instrument.

Buy some R&B/Hip hop Cd's (programmed Drums) study the beats and every nuance of them, how the fit in the time, where in time is the kick landing, where in time is the snare landing, how are the hi hats being played and keeping time! Then go to your kit with your CD and practice playing the beats to the music putting everything you have studied into action. Count the beats out loud 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 making sure your kick is dead on 1 and 3 and your snare ids on 2 and 4. Do this everyday for an hour.

You need to learn how to do fills properly! Start listening and copying other drummers and what they are doing, listen to where they are placing their fills and what kind of fills.

And like I tell everyone buy a metronome and a book of rudiments. set the speed slow do them so they sound consistent and gradually increase the speed, do this for half an hour.

Everyone has to start someone where-- slow, control, repetition and patient are key elements. Way to step up keep practicing, don’t give up! Keep seeking knowledge and you will grow. Invest in Kenny Aronoff DVD "Power Workout Complete" this will definitely help with coordination.
BBD is right, sound advise and encourage words too brother. I’ll be posting something in next month or two, need a new computer. Until then practice the right things to obtain perfection. Peace…

Okay, first of all. . . you actually have more guts than I do. 'Cause I haven't put up anything of me playing.

Secondly, I agree with ALMOST everything BBD told you. Try to focus mainly on practicing your precision. The speed and "licks" will come. Learn things the right way and your body will speed up naturally as you do it more.]

The one thing that I would hesitate about is the R&B and hip hop music. If you're saved, be careful about what you let go into your ears. You can't put kool-aid in a glass and expect to pour out Dr. Pepper. Only what's inside can come out. . .and the only thing you'll have inside you is what you let inside you. I'm not trying to be too deep, but, if you're trying to walk in righteousness it's a complete, whole-life endeavor. (Remember: This is a Gospel website)

The apostle Paul says that if something may cause our brother (or in this case -- sister) to fall, then we shouldn't do it. If you are one of those few people who are not affected by words, then ignore this message. But if you understand the power of persuasion (which is the only REAL power that Satan has in this realm) then take heed to this advice and be careful about the type of lyrics that you allow to enter into your spirit. You'll open doors that will take years to close.

With that said, there are numerous Gospel recordings that would allow you to hear what BBD was trying to get you to learn from the hip hop and R&B MUSIC. I agree with him that those STYLES of music will grant you the exposure that you need to learn what each drum part does. But remember that Gospel is a message, not a style. And since Gospel music is not limited in what musical form it should follow, there are many styles that are used to get the message across, so you don't have to leave Gospel music to find the STYLES that BBD suggested.

This is no indictment or attack on BBD by any means. So nobody try to stir up anything. This is STRICTLY from an I-don't-want-our-sister-to-fall standpoint.

Happy practicing!!!

Thanks for all of your comments! Now I know what I really need to work on. Here lately I've been working on my double bass a little more but my feet aren't that quick yet. I really wish I could get a video on here of my playing that you can actually hear good by it is so loud in my room it's hard to. I'm going to be recorded Easter Sunday so I'll try to figure out a way to put that on here.

"Your playing had power, you don't see too many amateur girls who play with power. If you want to go pro your playing need allot of work! I saw your guitar video, at your age choose one instrument get awesome at it then move to the next one. Id say drums is your best instrument." -BBD

I don't really ever play the guitar. It's just something I like to fool around with when it's late at night and I can't play my drums. lol I agree, the drums are defnently my best instrument here! Especially since I've been playing them a lot longer!

I've just got one question, what would be a good way to improve my fills? I usually play along to different cd's and stuff when I'm not playing at the church, I do try to copy what the drummer is doing on the cd.

Keep tellin' me what ya think!

Any comments on double bass on vid 3?

Again as several have already I would like to give big props for posting here (something I am yet to do).

BBD covered things pretty well on what to work on.

I will say this particularly in improving your precision and sound... lower the height of your hihat. For a clean/articulate and fast hihat sound you need to play more on top of it with the bead/tip of the stick not on the side wit hthe shoulder like you are. I know that it is in a lot of rock but it gives a muddy sound to your playing.

Also in helps with your timing and fills get a metronome like the Dr. Beat DB-60 or DB-() or the Tama Rhythm Watch or Yamaha Click Station and play to the subdivision. Count out loud and always count licks/rhythms in time. "If you can say it (count in time) you can play it!" Never play faster than you can clearly say it when learning something new. Start slow. If you get tonguetied or start to have erratic breathing you will play it the same way because your body's rhythm is disturbed.

Keep practicing. Work on making everything groove regardless of the tempo.

Just keep practicing them! Also start buying drum teaching DVD's. Get a good teacher, even if you only go once a month.
I use to copy the fills off the tape (hahaha 1984) and try to do them at Church in service. It wouldnt always work out, but thats how you learn. I had a Pastor who let me learn tho. Just do it!

The only reason I play like that wiht my high hats is because I like the rock sound. Of course in church I wouldn't play them like that.
