Any of you guys hold back?

Do any of you guys hold back when playing at church?

i know i do because we have a couple of musicians without that internal metronome so if i do somethin it might mess up stuff because people dont know how to count. when i say do somethin im not talking about just a standard lick im sayin something that plays around the counts a little bit not only that but i have gotten into left handed fills and them by themselves are just different than what most are used to hearing.

i talked to some guys about it and some of them think that one sunday i should just let it out and put my stamp on those drums where as others say that i should leave that stuff to outside gigs and the sheds...

what about you guys?

Then that would just make you the Church Band IDOT if you were to so called put your  stamp on those drums !!!!! The question is are you there for the band and worship or are you there for self gain! If you know the other musicians cant hang why would you put them in a compromising position!? So you can show off !?

when i say im holdin back i mean im strait 2 and 4. maybe a fill here or there. Trust me most of the other musicians can hang it's just two of them that when i try somethin out in rehearsal i'll get a nod from a few guys but those two will look at me funny. one actually asked me to keep it strait for him . . . .

im not sayin im goin to go crazy over a worship song or somethin. we are doin a new song with our womens group by Karen Clark Sheard called "Authority" not this sunday but next and at the end its kinda wide open for crazyness. the original drummer on there was rippin and thats what i plan on doin since i haven't shown that side of me except in sound check on the road. where convieniently i get asked why i dont play like that in service  .. . .. . .

I see, sorry! In that case don't hold back cause the two don't want to take the time to improve! If the rest of the band is slamming the two will have to buck up or leave, nothing worse then weak links!!!

ah but when one of them is . . . . nm.... but yeah man the other problem is the vocalist... they have no sense of time, they are singers not singer/musicians like Fred Hammond, Alicia Keys, etc. . . . .so they will definitly get lost

I FEEL you my organist is like that idk if he has bad timing but he controls the WHOLE band like he does whatever he wants and everyone else has to play what he wants them to play so he can do his thing... and like when i play with my homie from this other church erone asks me how come at my home church i dont do those kinda fills. like the organist gets mad when i do a 3 over 2 fill. he seriously thinks im better then SPANKY.....SPANKY!!!!! just because i stay in the pocket the whole service wasup with musicians and vocalist nowdays how come SOME just wanna do there thing and nobody else can get loose? i feel you man...

i mean, in a way we all have to.  we play or get paid to play whatever the MD wants us to play as well as when the spirit leads.  most of time you're not trying to draw attention to yourself because someone might be waiting on a breakthrough according to the way you praise on your instrument.  however there are certain songs you that you just cant help it...

those are the songs im talking abouot. where you know you should do somethin crazy but instead you have to keep it simple. . . . frustrating. specially when we did war cry a few weeks ago.....

sometimes im able to keep it simple but then other times i cant help myself...specially if the MD starts a bunch of phrasing and stuff, i cant help but start doin some stuff in between man...

I HOLD BACK B/C I'M LISTENING TO WHAT'S GOING ON AROUND ME, LET'S SAY THE PRAISE TEAM ARE KINDA LACKING ONE SUNDAY, I CAN'T PUT MY STAMP ON THE DRUMS B/C THE SONG MAY BE DEAD, THEN IT MAKES ME LOOK LIKE I'M SHOWING OFF, NO NEED FOR THAT, SO I JUST CHILL, KNOWING WHEN ARE WHERE TO DO THINGS ARE SOOOOOOOOOO CRUCIAL!!!!!!!!    ALWAYS PLAY WITH THE MUSIC

Truthfully speaking man,

If you let the holy spirit lead....then you will know when it's time to hold back or when it's ok to praise him with a nice fill.
It depends on how the spirit leads. If you find yourself waiting for the right time to throw in that off the wall lick.....then you are thinking of self instead of doing your job.
That's the way I see it atleast.
