I don't count calories, I count carbs.  I've lost 40 lbs in 3 months.  I also learned that eating to FEW calories is counterproductive.  On Friday it looks like you ate too few.  Your body will rebel thinking it is starving and hold on to every drop you take in.  Trust me I have been there too many times to count.  I prayed and asked the Lord what to do about my weight, and He told me what to do.  I am encouraging you to keep on and just trust that this is something that God's grace is for.  He gives us the strength to not overeat or eat things that harm our bodies.  Give it to Him.

BTW, I enjoy your posts!

I BET YOU'D ENJOY THEM A LOT MORE IF I HAD A BODY LIKE ARNOLD SCHWARTZ-A-WHATEVER!  LOL!

I hear ya!

Now that you've admitted to losing 40 pounds in 3 months, you have made me feel worse!  Just kidding.

Bassthumpa is some kinda motivator!  I thank God for that brutha for real.  Hopefully all the LGM Fat Crew (of which I am chief) will go to TDP and sign up.  We can help each other get there.

Man, I remember when I was working out extensively. I couldn't get past 147 to save my life. Maybe I was doing something wrong at the time. I was taking Weight Gainer 3500 and whey protein two times a day every other day, alternating, creatine three times a day, and eating three full meals with three big snacks in between. I had to be getting about 4000-5000 calories a day, and I stopped at 147. We fasted earlier this year and I lost almost 10lbs in three days (to 126lbs). I thought I was going to die. I hadn't been that small since I was 23.

From what I understand since I've been in a nutrition program at the university, you seem to be doing okay.  They test your metabolic rate and base your calories on what your body needs to maintain at a resting state, and then adjust it by your estimated daily activity.  Like my job is pretty sedentary, so my calorie intake should be lower than someone who is always standing and walking around.

It's a good program and my wellnes benefit pays for it, predalawd, LOL!

I have this program called balance log that allows you to enter everything you eat, and it already has many popular prepared foods, and then you can view reports of all of the essential vitamins and minerals that you've taken in and the percentages of the RDA, along with all the bad stuff and the RDA for those as well.  It's a great program, I just pray I stay on track.

But there is a new devil in town....beware!

The ComplEats meals by Hormel?  THE DEVIL!!

Yesterday, trying to be a "good boy", I had the little pot roast and potatoes meal by them.

It was small, very filling, even the package was "cute".   How about that was the largest thing (calorie wise) that I ate yesterday?  And they ain't but $2!

When I went to the Diabetic seminar (where I found out about being borderline), they talked about counting carbs and how much weight people have lost in doing so.

I just never understood the whole "value" thereof.  If I count carbs, and let's say I had 2 carbs today.  So what?  Does 1 carb minus 1 carb equal zero and make me skinny?  What am I counting and why?

Hey Herman,

I am sorry it has taken me so long to respond. I have been very sick with what ever is going around.

I feel much better today though.  Now to your question about counting carbs.  Why does it work, and what is the benefit?

I am going to give you the short answer, but I suggest you do your own research  on the subject.

Counting carbs and keeping them low keeps your blood sugar stable and normal.

What do carbohydrates have to do with blood glucose?

Everything!! All foods with carbohydrate -- whether rice, jelly beans, or watermelon -- break down to simple sugars in our bodies. This is what causes our blood glucose to rise. The carbohydrate in most starchy foods (potatoes, bread) is simply a collection of long chains of glucose, which break down quickly and raise blood sugar.

What Do Our Bodies Do When Blood Sugar is High?
When our blood sugar goes up, our body responds by secreting insulin to stabilize it. The sugar is then taken out of the blood and converted into fat; insulin's primary function is facilitating the storage of extra sugar in the blood as fat.

So in a nutshell, keep your blood sugar up and your body keeps storing fat.  When you reduce the amount of carbs significantly, your body begins to use the food you eat and stored body fat for energy.  The insulin response is what causes your body to raise cholesterol levels, high blood pressure etc.  My numbers are all lower since I started eating this way and so are my husbands.  My Dr. is very happy that I have cut out the carbs! There are so many studies. But go to http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9F04E2D61F3EF934A35754C0A9649C8B63&sec=health
That article will get you started. I have many more if you are interested.  Just let me know.  I hope this helps you some.
What I eat on a typical day. A low carb diet is not all meat!  I eat plenty of fruit and veggies!  I was also pre-diabetic but now my numbers are ALL NOrmal!!! My friend who was full blown diabetic eats this way and is not longer on meds!  Her blood pressure is normal as well as her cholesterol. We also make low carb cake and cookies so it is possible to eat sugar free.  I don't eat any sugar, but I do use a natural sweeteners called stevia and Xylitol.

Breakfast:
2 eggs
bacon, or tky sausage
Low carb pita
coffee with cream

Lunch:
Smoked brisket or fish, steak or chicken
spinach salad, roasted broccoli
strawberries

Dinner:
similar to lunch maybe different veggies or peaches.
Eating this way I eat about 30 -40 carbs a day and I eat a significant amount of fat.  (fat does not make you fat, sugars and starches do)

Now I can eat this way for the rest of my life because I do not feel deprived.  Once I got past the no potatoes(for me) I was fine. This does not mean I will never eat another potato ever, but for now I don't eat them.
Ok this is where the science come in.  I will link you to other studies and sites that can explain it better than I can.

http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/lowcarb101/a/lcbenefits.htm This site has many links to studies that will help better than I can! LOL

Pray and ask God to help you, and He will.

yep! 1 med. peach has about 8 net carbs. (I subtract the fiber because it does not have blood sugar impact)

I eat peaches, melon and most berries. I also eat about 1/2 of an apple sometimes too. It just depends on what I want.   I stay away from the higher glycemic fruits like bananas though.  Some people don't eat any fruit, but you don't have to give up fruit.  I wanted something I could do for the rest of my life, not a quick fix.  So this is what I feel the Lord led me to. I must say that I never feel deprived at all, and my blood sugar is level.  I don't get that afternoon slump like I used to either.

You pray and seek God about what you are to do for your body. I promise that He will lead you to information or people that can help you.  His grace will also be there when you are at your weakest!
