A little music history...
« on: April 15, 2006, 10:57:58 PM »
Yo.  This is the Young Jazz Giants playing one of my favorite tunes ever.  This is Giant Steps originally written and performed by the great John Coltrane.

Cameron Graves is on keys, Kamasi Washington is on sax.  The quartet is rounded out with the Bruner brothers Ronald and Stephen on bdrums and bass respectively.

Give it a gander.

Know your roots!

Thanks for the clip man! Giant Steps is one of my favorite jazz tunes also! A tune with just simple 2-5-1 progressions, yet so full. This version gives the original a run for it's money!Ron Bruner is a dope drummer....very fast and sensitive! Thanks once again!

Yo i agree that this version is hot because its a bunch of young guys paying respect to there elders.  It also lets the older generation know that there are young cats still interested in the roots of music.  I the only thing that would make this version better is that the pianist is not eating CROW on this one.  Those of you who know the original story of the Giant Steps session know that Ole Coltrane did Tommy Flanagan really raw by not giving him the music so he could shed those changes.  Thats a hard tune to sight read and solo on the spot.  I've seen grown men sweat playing that tune!  Also know that i'm not saying that Tommy Flanagan is a bad player, nor am i saying that Trane is a bad dude... although he was really SCAN for that one!!

Be Blessed
