Complaints about loudness
« on: April 21, 2006, 02:29:59 PM »
Hey fellow musicians!!! Does anyone get complaints from church members about playing too loud? I play for two churches and I get occassional complaints from one church about the organ being too loud? I don't think my settings are loud.

I BET I HELP CONTROL YOUR PROBLEM.

I HAVE A QUESTION.

DOES YOUR ORGAN LESLIE SIT RIGHT NEXT,BEHIND OR NEAR YOU? OR DOES IT SIT SOMEWHERE REMOTE TO WHERE YOU ARE?

It's to my left, a few feet away.

Well, I don't play the organ much, I mainly stay on the keys, but when I do get on..sometimes I feel like I'm too loud, but that's because I got so many complaints about being too loud on both!  We have an organist, and sometimes she can be loud b/c she feels others can't hear her, honestly, sometimes they can and sometimes they can't!  But if they say you're too loud, take their advice...just work at it, cause you want to be an enhancement to the services, and not a distraction!

The Leslie is positioned away from the congregation, near piano, next to the choir stand.

You are right. I never want to be a distraction. I'm a disciplined, obedient musician. I just turn the organ down and roll with it.

My first thought is where and who are the complaints coming from?
How does the pastor respond to your playing?
You won't please everyone so start with a priority list.
1st God (read psalm 150)
2nd the leader/Pastor
3rd your self (wise judgment)
4th chior master/ minister of music
5th other musicians that play with you
6th chior members
7th congregation

I only put congregation last becuause if you've done the first three all else should fall in place.
and the congregation will be ministered to.
those that complain at this point will conplain no matter what.

Just remember to use that pedle under your right foot as an expression pedel and not a volume pedel or a gas pedel (like when we're late for service and we break the law to get there to serve God  :D :D ::)   )

Anyway just remember to play with control and when the spirit hits you let it use you regardless of what folks say when you play in the spirit you will never be out of order

be blessed

That is true.you can't please everybody.I get told sometimes they can't hear me.When i play the organ i turn the organ  up over half way up.The drawbars don't even be all the way out.?I ask one of the choir members do i play to loud and he told me no.The pastor wife told me to turn it up.WE really want to hear u.SO i listend to the pastor's wife.I know when to get loud and when to bring the music down.I know several musicians that play louder then i do.They have the organ turned all the way up.WE have two leslie one is beside me by one choir stand and the other one is by the other choir stand and piano.
